There are an extraordinary number of hockey players of Ukrainian descent in the United States and Canada. Hundreds, if not thousands, have played in the National Hockey League and other leagues. I have been fortunate enough to interview some of them: Ken Daneyko, Wayne Babych, Morris Lukowich, Dave Babych, Clint Malarchuk, Dennis Polonich, Dennis Maruk, Tyler Mosienko, Jeff Bandura, Brent Gogol, Russell Romaniuk, Mike Zuke, Dave Chyzowski, and other distinguished figures. They are known around the world because they are hockey stars who, at the same time, represent Ukraine.<\/span><\/p>

At the same time, the history of Ukrainian hockey contains many unique stories that remain little known or are virtually unknown to the general public. Such information tends to attract the attention only of experts and those well versed in the past. So, in order to learn more about this remarkable chapter in the history of Ukrainian hockey in the diaspora, I suggest going back several decades\u2014to Germany. After the end of World War II, thousands of Ukrainians were forced to remain there. They could not and did not want to return to the tyrannical Soviet Union. As a result, they had to build their everyday lives and create a new existence abroad under extremely difficult conditions.<\/span><\/p>

At the same time, U.S. troops were stationed in Germany. Among them were many sports enthusiasts, including both amateur and professional hockey players. After the war, the world was recovering, and society was trying to rebuild its new life, including its sporting life. Given the energy and resilience of Ukrainians, naturally, every sphere of life began to revive once again: sports, art, education, culture, various professions, and much more. Although hockey, for a number of reasons, was not as popular among Ukrainians as soccer or track and field, it nevertheless had long-standing and significant traditions. Therefore, as sporting life among Ukrainians in the camps of Germany, Austria, and Italy began to revive, a question emerged: how could a new chapter of Ukrainian hockey be launched abroad?<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

How Ukrainians Overcame Obstacles in Developing Hockey<\/b><\/h3>

Here it is worth turning to the direct witnesses and participants in the establishment of Ukrainian hockey in Germany. These are the recollections of Oleh Lysiak, a sports and community activist of the Ukrainian diaspora: \u201cThis happened, probably, forty years ago. Most of the Ukrainian \u2018displaced people\u2019 were living in Bavaria in DP camps on IRO soup or, as we would say in Galicia, pea \u2018soup,\u2019 but the younger generation, although living mostly on that \u2018soup\u2019 and the famous \u2018Haferflocken,\u2019 radiated energy \u2014 especially sporting energy\u2026 Over the course of several months, we began gathering together all of our hockey players scattered across Germany in emigration, sewing sports uniforms and equipment from underwear and long johns donated by the IRO, blanket covers, making gloves from scraps of leather, obtaining boots, skates, sticks, and many other things with the help of barter dealers. It was not easy. Sometimes Milio and I thought we should simply give it all up and abandon our project, because on top of everything else we still had to obtain permission from the administration of the Olympic Stadium in nearby Garmisch-Partenkirchen to train there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

From this excerpt, we learn that Ukrainians had almost no resources for developing hockey. Yet this did not stop them. On the contrary, it motivated them even more strongly to achieve their goal.<\/span><\/p>

The newspaper Ukrainska Trybuna in Germany wrote the following about the formation of the team: \u201cAt the initiative of the well-known Ukrainian hockey player Omelian Buchatsky, the first Ukrainian ice hockey club in emigration is being established. Omelian Buchatsky, the popular \u2018Milio,\u2019 has already contacted his former club teammates and together with them is forming a club that will be called the \u2018Carpathian Wolves.\u2019 The club will be based in Mittenwald. The organization has encountered difficulties because of the lack of equipment. Everyone interested in the establishment and development of a Ukrainian club devoted to this wonderful branch of winter sport should, to the best of their ability, make every effort to support its growth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Once again, we read that the road toward creating a Ukrainian hockey team was far from easy. Nevertheless, Ukrainians overcame these difficulties together and did so remarkably well.<\/span><\/p>

At this point, it is worth turning to Omelian Buchatsky\u2019s recollections of the first steps of Ukrainian hockey in Germany: \u201cIn the late 1940s, Lev was one of only three foreign hockey teams in the western part of Germany and Austria. The other teams were the Latvian YMCA and the Jewish Maccabi team, which ceased to exist after several games. Considering the many obstacles and difficulties Lev faced \u2014 including the lack of hockey equipment and an ice rink for practices or games, as well as the fact that only three hockey players were living in the Mittenwald camps \u2014 the very creation of this team can be regarded as a true miracle. I began forming the team in the autumn of 1946, but it only took proper shape in the autumn of the following year. I managed to find a fairly solid group of capable and experienced players, but only three of them lived in Mittenwald, while the others were scattered over considerable distances. Thanks to persistence and assistance from the camp administration, we managed to bring the team together for its first practice at the Olympic ice arena in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in early 1948.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Indeed, to bring this project to life, Omelian Buchatsky and his like-minded colleagues had to make truly enormous efforts.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

How Did Ukrainians Compete Against the Americans?<\/b><\/h3>

These unique matches between Ukrainian and American hockey players in Germany are best told through the recollections of those who directly participated in the events. Fortunately, they left us this remarkable information. Omelian Buchatsky recalled: \u201cOn February 15, 1948, Lev played its first official match in Garmisch, defeating a German second-string team 8\u20134. Another game, against Grainau, ended 18\u20134, with Buchatsky and Dytsio combining for ten goals. However, a serious test for Lev came in a match against the Neubiberg Flyers, a team made up of the best players among U.S. military personnel stationed in Europe. The team included quite a few professional players, and they defeated us 5\u20131. It was a very rough game; our opponents threw Lev off balance, forcing the team to retaliate physically instead of focusing on our usual free-flowing puck movement. Nearly all of our players were injured; Lysiak, in particular, lost consciousness and spent the following week in the hospital. By the rematch a week later, Lev had learned its lesson: we used a quick-passing strategy, trying to avoid physical contact as much as possible. We won 4\u20133, but the price was a serious injury to our leading scorer Dyts, which kept him out for the rest of the season. Overall, despite all the difficulties, the first season proved successful. For me personally, it was particularly significant because I was invited to train with an Austrian team in Innsbruck.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

We learn that the first matches against German teams were not particularly difficult, and the Ukrainians clearly outplayed them. However, once American hockey players entered the picture, the situation changed. According to Buchatsky, there were professional players among the U.S. servicemen. It is therefore understandable why they were able to defeat the Ukrainian team. Yet even against professionally trained and well-prepared hockey players, the Ukrainians proved highly capable on the ice.<\/span><\/p>

Omelian Buchatsky also recalled one of the finest matches of his career: \u201cAt the end of 1949, the Lev team merged with Dovbush, which was based in a displaced persons camp near Munich. Our most famous match took place at Munich\u2019s Prinzregenten Stadium against a U.S. military team representing all of Europe. We won 12\u20134, and I scored four goals.\u201d In other words, the Ukrainian team defeated a select team of American hockey players in Europe.<\/span><\/p>

As one of the best Ukrainian hockey players in emigration at the time, Buchatsky described the desire to play the sport this way: \u201cBeginning in 1948, hockey developed actively in the displaced persons camps. In winter, soccer fields were turned into ice rinks and filled with enthusiastic players.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Oleh Lysiak also left exceptionally interesting recollections of matches between Ukrainians and American hockey players: \u201cBring on America! We wanted to make Ukrainian hockey history! How Milio managed it \u2014 God only knows. He kept hanging around the Prinzregenten Stadium in Munich, where the American hockey players also trained, until one day he came back with the news that we were playing! We were playing against the American military all-star team, which proudly called itself the Red Wings! Everything began to boil: skates were sharpened, sticks were wrapped with fresh tape, telegrams were sent to players living elsewhere, the supporters of our team \u2014 meaning all of Mittenwald \u2014 stopped talking about leaving for America and started dreaming about a Lev victory. I was doing publicity in the Ukrainian Tribune in Munich, posters were being printed, buses and trucks were being prepared, and there was only one slogan: \u2018Give the Americans a beating!\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>

What preparation for a match! It turns out the Ukrainians were looking forward to the game so much that, according to Oleh Lysiak, they even put aside talk of leaving for the United States. Can you imagine that?<\/span><\/p>

Oleh Lysiak gave a detailed account of the match in his article \u201cHow We \u2018Beat Up\u2019 the Americans.\u201d He wrote: \u201cWhen we got off the overcrowded bus in front of the stadium around noon, the mood was serious\u2026 Our leader, engineer Roman Rakotchy \u2014 whose son-in-law, Mykhailo Krushelnytsky, is now a partner of the finest hockey player in Canada and America, the famous Gretzky \u2014 was there, as were our two friendly Estonians, the Savo brothers, Liubko Tsymbalisty from Munich, Yurko Dytsio from Neumarkt, Adasko Markovsky from Berchtesgaden, Romko Kalytiak from Regensburg, and four of us from Mittenwald. Only Oles Muts, Budnyi, and Mocherniak were missing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

The reason not all Ukrainian hockey players could make it to the match was that there simply were not enough skates, gloves, or sticks for everyone. These were the extremely difficult conditions in which Ukrainian athletes had to compete against American and German teams.<\/span><\/p>

The Ukrainian community prepared with tremendous enthusiasm to support the Lions. Several thousand spectators came to the match. Cameraman Soluk filmed the game and also took photographs for posterity. In addition, the local press actively discussed, publicized, and analyzed the match.<\/span><\/p>

The recollections also give us a description of the American hockey players: \u201cThe Americans were Americans \u2014 enormously tall, mostly around two hundred pounds, heavily armored, chewing gum and smiling as they looked at our \u2018long-john-and-undershirt uniforms\u2019 with the proud word Lev written across them.\u201d Naturally, the Ukrainians were somewhat angered by this slightly condescending attitude and decided to give the Americans a worthy sporting response.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The match unfolded as follows: \u201cThe very first attack by the Dytsio\u2013Buchatsky pair, who had played together since high school, gave a taste of what was coming: the puck was in the Red Wings\u2019 net! And then it began: the Wings\u2019 two-meter-tall defenseman McCormick chased Milio around like a madman; our opponents were doing everything they could, but the goals kept coming one after another \u2014 in our favor, of course\u2026 And so the great premiere ended with a score of 10\u20131.\u201d What a confident victory for the Ukrainian hockey players!<\/span><\/p>

The Almanac of the Council of Physical Culture offered the following assessment of Ukrainian hockey in Germany: \u201cIn conclusion\u2026 it must be stated that the hockey players demonstrated a great deal of energy and initiative and achieved successes matched by very few other branches of sport.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Thus, despite overcoming numerous obstacles, Ukrainian hockey players demonstrated character, skill, and a hunger for victory. This is confirmed by a series of matches against American hockey players, who, of course, enjoyed far more comfortable conditions than the Ukrainians. It is further proof of the strength of the Ukrainian spirit and nation! Because when you know your history \u2014 you are certain to achieve victory!<\/span><\/p>
