A new massive shelling of Ukraine by Russia reminded of the scale of the war and its consequences for civilians. US President Donald Trump sharply criticized Putin and announced his readiness for decisive steps, while emphasizing the need for negotiations. Negotiations are underway in Washington and Warsaw on security guarantees that should become the basis for lasting peace and strengthening NATO.
Donald Trump said that he learned “interesting things” about the war in Ukraine
The US president said during a briefing that he “learned interesting things” about the Russian-Ukrainian war. He answered this when asked whether he had spoken with Vladimir Putin after a recent meeting in Alaska. Trump did not specify details, but promised that journalists would learn more in the coming days, calling this information “very interesting.” At the same time, he did not explain what consequences Russia could face if Putin refused to meet with Volodymyr Zelensky.
President Trump stressed that the United States could take a “different position” on Russia if there is no progress in resolving the war. The White House earlier announced an important statement by Trump, and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant confirmed that this week the authorities would “very carefully” consider the issue of sanctions against Russia. According to Axios, the administration is considering suspending diplomatic efforts if the parties do not demonstrate greater flexibility. There is also growing irritation in Washington over the lack of progress after the meeting with Putin. Part of the responsibility is being shifted to Europe, accusing it of Ukraine’s unwillingness to make concessions.
Massive Russian strike: over 500 drones and dozens of missiles on Ukraine
On the night of September 3, the Russian Federation carried out a massive strike on Ukraine, launching over 500 drones and two dozen missiles. The main target, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky, was civilian targets, including energy infrastructure. The attacks were directed mainly at the western and central regions of the country, injuring at least five people. The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed the intensity of the strikes and stressed that the number of attacks was increasing even during the day.
Zelensky called the strikes “demonstrative” and said that Putin was demonstrating his impunity. He called on partners to strengthen sanctions, especially against the Russian military economy, which continues to receive support from China, North Korea and India. At the time, the Kremlin rejected the idea of direct negotiations, despite Trump’s proposals for a ceasefire. Zelensky continues his international tour, visiting Denmark, where he met with leaders of northern Europe and the Baltics, and plans talks in Paris with Emmanuel Macron. NATO’s involvement and the mobilization of additional resources remain critical to strengthening Ukraine’s defenses.
US and Poland Discuss Security Guarantees for Ukraine
US President Donald Trump met in Washington with newly elected Polish President Karol Nawrocki, who joined key telephone talks with European partners on Ukraine.
This time, the discussion focused on the war, energy security and the possibilities of strengthening NATO's eastern flank. The Polish side insists on maintaining and even increasing the presence of American troops in the country, despite possible plans by the Pentagon to reduce the contingent in Europe. Trump is expected to push Warsaw to new purchases of American weapons, which already include the Abrams, F-35 and HIMARS.
In turn, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a meetingdedicated to future security guarantees for Ukraine. The Polish Foreign Ministry reported that the parties agreed on joint efforts to achieve "a lasting and just end to the war".
Warsaw stressed that American support and close cooperation in the security sphere are key to the stability of the region. The parties confirmed their common position on the need to maintain a strong front against Russian aggression.
Trump again criticized Putin
In a conversation on Scott Jennings' radio show, US President Donald Trump said, that he was "very disappointed" with Vladimir Putin. He emphasized that the administration plans to take concrete steps to reduce the number of victims of the war in Ukraine. According to Trump, he personally told Volodymyr Zelensky that the United States will help guarantee Ukraine's security in any future peace agreement.
Trump reiterated that he does not rule out the introduction of additional sanctions against the Russian Federation if there is no progress in the settlement. He also stated that the issue of "territory exchange" could become part of any possible settlement. At the same time, the US president expressed confidence in the strength of the American army, noting: "We have the strongest army in the world, without a doubt. They will never use their army against us. Believe me."
