The Ukrainian community of Ohio expressed gratitude to Governor Mike DeWine and Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted for proclaiming November 2024 as the Month of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holodomor-Genocide of the Ukrainian People. This gesture stands as a significant act of solidarity with Ukraine and honors the memory of the millions of victims of the 1932–1933 tragedy.
This was reported by United Ukrainian Organizations of Ohio.
It was noted that Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted signed an official resolution proclaiming November 2024 as the Month of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holodomor-Genocide of the Ukrainian People.
The document provides a detailed account of the 1932–1933 tragedy, during which Stalin’s Soviet regime deliberately orchestrated an artificial famine to destroy the Ukrainian nation.
In their official resolution, the governor and his team highlighted the historical facts of the Holodomor, which claimed the lives of between 5 to 12 million Ukrainians. The document also emphasizes that these actions targeted the eradication of the Ukrainian people’s national identity, particularly through the suppression of intellectuals, clergy, and community leaders.
Additionally, the resolution draws parallels between the Holodomor tragedy and Russia’s current war against Ukraine. The text points out that similar methods of genocide are being used today, including the abduction of children, destruction of infrastructure, and manipulation of food supplies.
The United Ukrainian Organizations of Ohio thanked state leadership for this initiative, which helps preserve historical memory and brings attention to crimes against humanity. This resolution is a vital contribution to the international recognition of the Holodomor and to supporting the Ukrainian nation in its current struggle for freedom and independence.
