As the third year of Russia’s so-called “three-day special operation” nears its end—an operation that, in reality, is a full-scale war against Ukraine that began in 2014 but has roots stretching back several centuries—the relevance of this discussion has never been greater.
Despite the pessimistic news of recent days, we want to believe that we will not witness a repeat of 1938, when the leading countries of the time chose to appease Nazi Germany—an aggressor whose ideology and methods are strikingly similar to those of today’s Russian regime—by allowing it to tear apart independent Czechoslovakia. We all remember how that appeasement ultimately ended…
Western politicians, civil society, and the media must recognize a crucial fact: if Russia wins, they will not only witness the destruction of democracy in Ukraine. They will see a Kremlin-orchestrated, Moscow Patriarchate-endorsed genocide against all Ukrainians—a campaign that the Russian army will execute with brutal efficiency, as it already did in 2022 in Bucha, Hostomel, Borodianka, and other occupied towns. Only this time, it will unfold on a much larger scale, wiping out entire regions still home to millions of innocent civilians.
To begin with, it must be acknowledged that throughout Russia’s war against Ukraine, the United States has played a critically important role in supporting the Ukrainian state. This support has come in the form of military and humanitarian aid, economic assistance, and active collaboration with international partners to impose sanctions on the aggressor. The U.S. has also been the driving force behind global pressure on Moscow, restricting Russia’s access to Western technology, weakening its military capabilities, and undermining its economic stability.
However, continued U.S. support for Ukraine is not just about security for individual nations or a struggle over territory. It is a strategically vital step toward preserving an international order in which states have the right to sovereignty and where violations of international law do not go unpunished.
And, paradoxical as it may sound, systemic support for Ukraine is strategically crucial for the United States itself. It helps maintain global order, strengthens the security of NATO allies, and prevents further escalation of Russian aggression while curbing the growing ambitions of America’s main geopolitical rival—China.
We must all grasp a fundamental axiom: Ukraine’s victory will send a strong message to other authoritarian regimes, particularly China, that aggression—regardless of its scale—will not go unanswered. That is why supporting Ukraine is not just an act of solidarity but a vital investment in global security and stability.
In this article, we will examine the key arguments for why supporting Ukraine is critically important for the United States. However, we will take a specific approach—starting from practical considerations and gradually moving toward the moral dimensions of the issue.
1. Weakening Russia as the Greatest Aggressor of the 21st Century
Over the past decades, Russia has repeatedly used military force to achieve its imperial ambitions, posing a threat not only to Ukraine but also to the global order. The full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 was not just another step in Russia's aggressive policy but part of a broader strategy aimed at shifting the global balance of power in favor of authoritarian regimes.
Therefore, supporting Ukraine is a strategic decision for the United States. It allows the U.S. to drain Russia’s military, economic, and political resources, weakening its ability to threaten not only neighboring countries but also stability across Europe, the Middle East, the Asia-Pacific region, and other global hotspots.
Economic Pressure Through Sanctions and IsolationWestern sanctions have become a powerful (though insufficient) tool in curbing Russian aggression. The U.S., along with its allies, has imposed extensive restrictions affecting key sectors of Russia's economy: energy, finance, technology, and trade.
For example, Russia has lost access to critical Western technologies, such as microchips and electronic components used in military equipment. Without these resources, its defense industry faces severe challenges, reducing its combat capability and weakening its position on the front lines.
Exhausting Military Resources Russia has already suffered massive losses in its war against Ukraine, significantly weakening its military potential. A large amount of destroyed equipment, the loss of experienced personnel, and forced mobilization have exposed the weaknesses of its army.
Russia’s defensive capabilities are being drained not only by battlefield losses but also by the constant need to replenish its supplies. U.S. and allied support provides Ukraine’s Armed Forces with modern weaponry, allowing them to effectively destroy Russian equipment, ammunition depots, and command centers.
Weakening Putin’s Political Regime Beyond military and economic losses, the war in Ukraine is causing deep internal upheaval within Russia itself. Failures on the front lines, sanctions pressure, and international isolation have heightened dissatisfaction among both the political elite and the general population. The war has dealt a severe blow to Russia’s economy: the outflow of investors, a reduction in exports, a drop in budget revenues, and rising inflation have created socio-economic instability.
In the future, this could lead to growing protest sentiments, divisions within the ruling circles, and regional challenges to the central government, significantly weakening the Kremlin’s ability to pursue its aggressive foreign policy.
Limiting Russia’s Influence in Other Regions. For a long time, Russia has used military conflicts to expand its influence around the world. The Kremlin maintains sway over authoritarian regimes in the Middle East, Latin America, many African countries, and other unstable regions. However, due to the war in Ukraine and its catastrophic consequences for the Russian economy, Moscow’s ability to operate in these regions has been significantly limited.
Previously, Russia had ample resources to fund its proxy armies and puppet regimes. Now, it is forced to divert all its efforts toward sustaining its own military machine in Ukraine, creating opportunities for the U.S. and its allies to strengthen their positions in strategically important regions.
A Global Signal to Authoritarian Regimes. Supporting Ukraine not only weakens Russia but also sends a clear message to other authoritarian states like China, Iran, and North Korea. The demonstration that the international community will not tolerate aggression and violations of international law forces potential aggressors to more carefully assess the risks before taking any forceful actions.
Ukraine’s victory will become a globally significant precedent, proving that democracies are capable of defending themselves and their allies from external threats posed by authoritarianism.
2. Economic Benefits and New Opportunities
Supporting Ukraine brings significant economic benefits to the United States, impacting the defense industry, energy sector, and financial markets. The war in Ukraine has unlocked new business opportunities worth hundreds of billions of dollars for American companies, particularly in Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction (as part of a mutually beneficial partnership). This reconstruction will be a key component of the “Ukrainian economic miracle,” which is bound to become a case study in both global and Ukrainian history books.
Defense Industry. The increased supply of weapons and military equipment to Ukraine has stimulated production in the U.S., positively impacting the economy. American defense companies such as Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and Northrop Grumman have already secured multi-billion-dollar contracts, ensuring job creation and growth in high-tech industries. It is also important to understand that a substantial portion of U.S. financial aid to Ukraine remains within the U.S., benefiting American enterprises. This amounts to tens of billions of dollars from the aid packages already allocated to Ukraine.
Energy Exports. Russia’s aggression has created new opportunities for the U.S. energy sector. The surge in liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports to Europe has generated billions in revenue and created additional jobs. Europe’s transition to alternative energy sources also presents new prospects for American companies specializing in renewable energy.
Strategically Reducing Russian Influence. Sanctions against Russia help diminish its influence on global markets, stabilizing the U.S. economy and reducing economic risks. As Russia’s dominance in the energy sector declines, American companies have strengthened their foothold in European and Asian markets, contributing to U.S. economic security.
Post-War Economic Opportunities. Once the war ends, Ukraine will require massive investments for reconstruction, opening up new opportunities for American companies in construction, energy, and technology. The U.S. can position itself as a key partner in rebuilding Ukraine’s infrastructure and economy on a foundation of reliability and mutual benefit.
Financial Market Stability. The war and sanctions have weakened Russia’s role in global financial markets, creating new opportunities for the U.S. Strengthening the dollar as a global reserve currency and increasing foreign investment in U.S. markets contribute to financial stability. This, in turn, serves as a powerful countermeasure against China’s geopolitical ambitions.
Thus, supporting Ukraine is not just about military aid—it is a strategic economic investment for the U.S., ensuring stability and long-term prosperity.
3. Countering the Influence of the U.S.’s Main Geopolitical Rival—China
Supporting Ukraine is a crucial element of the U.S. global strategy to contain authoritarian states, particularly China, which is currently America’s primary economic competitor. However, China does not use its economic power solely for economic purposes—it leverages it for broader geopolitical ambitions. If Russia succeeds in Ukraine, it would send a powerful message to China that forcibly redrawing borders is possible without severe consequences. Therefore, supporting Ukraine is essential not only for Europe or the Middle East but for maintaining the global balance of power.
Deterring China from Aggression Against Taiwan. If Russia achieves victory in Ukraine, China may interpret this as a sign of U.S. weakness, potentially encouraging aggressive actions toward Taiwan. However, if the West, led by the United States, demonstrates resolve by aiding Ukraine, it will send a strong signal to Beijing that any attempt at forcibly seizing Taiwan will have severe repercussions.
Strengthening U.S. Alliances in the Indo-Pacific Region. Firm U.S. support for Ukraine enhances trust among its allies in the Indo-Pacific, including Japan, South Korea, India, and Australia. This fosters stronger partnerships within alliances such as QUAD (the U.S., Japan, India, and Australia) and AUKUS (the U.S., the UK, and Australia), both of which are key to countering China’s influence in the region.
Limiting the China-Russia Partnership. A Russian victory in Ukraine would strengthen its strategic partnership with China, creating additional challenges for the U.S. However, sanctions and the ongoing war are significantly weakening Russia, making it a less attractive military and political ally for Beijing. This limits the prospects for deeper cooperation between the two authoritarian regimes. However, China has already turned Russia into a raw materials supplier and is unlikely to relinquish these economic advantages.
Competition for Resources and Markets. The Russia-Ukraine war has already altered the dynamics of trade relations between China and Russia. Russia’s weakening gives the U.S. an opportunity to expand its economic presence in Europe and Asia while strengthening ties with Central Asian countries, where competition was previously dominated by China and Russia.
Technological Rivalry with China. Supporting Ukraine and imposing sanctions on Russia restricts Moscow’s access to advanced technologies, making it harder for Russia to collaborate with China in key tech sectors. At the same time, the U.S. is accelerating the development of its own technological capabilities, giving it a competitive edge in the global confrontation with Beijing.
Thus, supporting Ukraine is not just about countering Russian aggression—it is also vital for containing China. A Ukrainian victory will send a clear signal to Beijing that the West will not tolerate forceful border changes and that any aggression, including against Taiwan, will have serious consequences.
4. Strengthening the International Authority of the United States
Supporting Ukraine in its war against Russian aggression is a key element in bolstering the international authority of the United States. This not only reaffirms its leadership in global security but also demonstrates a steadfast commitment to democratic values and the international order. The world is closely watching the actions of the U.S.: allies are assessing its resolve, while authoritarian regimes are testing its endurance.
Enhancing Trust Among Allies. U.S. support for Ukraine sends a strong signal to its allies, particularly in Europe, the Baltics, and Eastern Europe. Continued American assistance will reinforce confidence in the U.S. as a reliable partner. Conversely, weakening this support could raise doubts among allies about America’s commitment to defending its partners in times of crisis.
Ukraine’s Victory as a Model for Other Nations. Ukraine’s success will set an important precedent, inspiring other nations striving for independence and democracy. It will prove that international support—led by the U.S.—can be a decisive factor in countering aggression and securing sovereignty.
U.S. Leadership in International Organizations. Backing Ukraine allows the U.S. to restore and strengthen its influence in global institutions such as the United Nations (UN), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), NATO, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). Ukraine’s success will enable Washington to more effectively promote initiatives that safeguard democracy, human rights, and global stability.
Expanding U.S. Influence Among New Allies. Supporting Ukraine reinforces U.S. alliances in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly with Japan, South Korea, Australia, and India. This reaffirms the U.S. commitment to defending global stability and strengthens cooperation within frameworks such as QUAD and AUKUS.
Thus, supporting Ukraine enhances the U.S.’s standing as a global leader, strengthens trust among allies, and helps build an international coalition against authoritarian threats. This is a strategic necessity for maintaining U.S. leadership on the world stage.
5. Defending Democratic Values
Russia’s war against Ukraine is not just a fight for territorial integrity—it is a key battle for the democratic values that form the foundation of the global order upheld by the United States and its allies. Ukraine, which has chosen the path of democracy, now stands at the frontline of a global struggle against an authoritarian regime—supported by other autocratic states—that seeks to destroy freedom, the rule of law, and the core principles of democracy.
This is why U.S. support for Ukraine is not only a crucial geopolitical decision but also a defense of the principles that shape the future of the democratic world. In this context, aiding Ukraine is not merely a response to aggression but a reaffirmation of the commitment to protecting fundamental human rights and freedoms on a global scale—principles that leaders from both the Old and New Worlds strongly emphasized at the Munich Security Conference just last week.
Protecting Human Rights and the Rule of Law. As widely documented, this war has been accompanied by mass violations of human rights, including killings and rape of civilians, deportations, illegal imprisonments, and attacks on civilian infrastructure.
The U.S., as a nation that stands for human rights, cannot remain indifferent. Supporting Ukraine means upholding international humanitarian law and ensuring that those responsible for war crimes are held accountable.
In this regard, assisting Ukraine is not just a reaction to aggression but a demonstration of commitment to human rights protection on a global level—an issue that was at the heart of discussions at the Munich Security Conference last week.
Preserving Freedom and Democracy in Wartime. Despite the war, Ukraine continues to uphold democratic institutions and human rights. Elections, freedom of speech, and press freedom remain essential components of Ukraine’s fight. U.S. support helps Ukraine not only on the battlefield but also in preserving its democratic order.
The U.S. as a Leader in Defending Global Democratic Values. The United States has traditionally been a champion of freedom, democracy, and human rights. By supporting Ukraine, the U.S. demonstrates its willingness to take action in defense of democracy, even under the threat of external aggression. This support is not only a strategic move but also a moral stance to preserve democratic values worldwide.
Thus, supporting Ukraine is critically important for safeguarding global democratic principles and continuing the fight for democracy against authoritarianism.
6. Protecting Allies and Stability in Europe
It is now an undeniable fact that Ukraine stands as the front line of defense for Europe against Russian aggression. The Ukrainian people’s fight against invasion is not only crucial for Ukraine itself but also part of a broader global struggle for stability and security in Europe and the world at large. Therefore, U.S. support for Ukraine is not just a strategic necessity but an investment in long-term stability on the European continent and beyond.
Defending the Baltic States and Poland. Russia poses a significant threat to the Baltic states and Poland, which, under current geopolitical conditions, are among the most strategically important U.S. allies within NATO. U.S. and allied support for Ukraine serves as a deterrent against this threat and sends a clear message that aggression will not go unanswered. This reinforcement of deterrence helps maintain stability in the region and prevents Russia from expanding its territorial and political influence.
Strengthening Trust in NATO as an Institution. Supporting Ukraine strengthens confidence in NATO among its members and countries aspiring to join the alliance. This automatically enhances the sense of security and creates opportunities for deeper cooperation between NATO and other nations. A more unified and capable NATO contributes to global efforts against authoritarian threats and helps ensure long-term security for its members.
Preventing the Escalation of Conflict. If the U.S. and its allies fail to provide sufficient support to Ukraine, Russia may expand its aggression to other regions of Europe, such as Moldova, Georgia, or the Balkans. By assisting Ukraine, the U.S. is not only defending Ukrainian sovereignty but also preventing the spread of aggression that could destabilize other European nations.
Thus, supporting Ukraine is of critical importance for maintaining security and stability in Europe. It helps protect the Baltic states, Poland, and other nations from Russian aggression, strengthens NATO’s credibility, and reinforces the strategic partnership between the U.S. and Europe.
7. The Moral Responsibility of the United States Toward Ukraine
This section overlaps with several of the arguments outlined above, but Russia’s war against Ukraine is not only a highly dangerous geopolitical challenge—it is also a profound moral test for nations that uphold human rights and democracy. The United States has a moral obligation to support Ukraine in its struggle for independence and sovereignty, thereby defending the fundamental principles of the global order.
This obligation is further reinforced by America’s historical responsibility toward Ukraine, as it was the U.S. that played a key role in convincing Ukraine to relinquish the world's third-largest nuclear arsenal to Russia under the 1994 Budapest Memorandum.
Human Rights Violations and War Crimes. Russia is committing numerous war crimes, including attacks on civilian infrastructure, mass executions, deportations, and torture. Supporting Ukraine is not just a strategic necessity—it is a moral duty for the U.S., as it sends a clear message that violations of human rights will not go unpunished and that aggression will not be rewarded.
Providing Humanitarian Assistance to Victims. The U.S. bears a moral responsibility to provide humanitarian aid to millions of Ukrainians who have lost their homes and become refugees. This support includes medical supplies, food, and assistance in rebuilding destroyed cities and infrastructure, with special attention to children and people with disabilities.
Solidarity With the Ukrainian People America’s moral obligation extends beyond military and financial aid—it also lies in demonstrating solidarity with the Ukrainian people, who are courageously fighting for their independence and dignity. U.S. support carries symbolic significance, offering hope and encouragement to every Ukrainian.
America’s Historical Responsibility. The U.S. has a long history of championing freedom and justice. Today, supporting Ukraine is part of this historical mission, reaffirming America’s role as a global leader in the fight for peace, security, and human rights.
This conflict is a test of fundamental global values such as democracy and international law. As the world’s leading democracy, the United States has a profound moral responsibility to defend these principles to preserve a stable and peaceful international order. Otherwise, the "new horsemen of the Apocalypse"—Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea—will create a completely different world order, where concepts like just peace, social stability, democracy, economic prosperity, and freedom of speech will no longer exist.
Ultimately, U.S. support for Ukraine provides a crucial opportunity to significantly weaken Russia as an aggressor—one that threatens not only global security but also the United States itself as the leader of the democratic world. Additionally, this support strengthens the security of U.S. allies and helps prevent potential escalations of conflicts in Eastern Europe and beyond.
The economic benefits for the U.S. from supporting Ukraine are also substantial and hold great potential. However, this support should be structured as a mutually beneficial partnership rather than a one-sided contribution. The growth of the defense industry, new opportunities for expanding energy exports, and participation in Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction create vast prospects for American businesses.
Furthermore, U.S. assistance to Ukraine sends a powerful message to other authoritarian regimes, particularly China, serving as a deterrent against any attempts at aggression in other parts of the world.
The moral aspect of this support is equally important. It involves the defense of human rights, accountability for war crimes, and humanitarian aid for those affected by the war. Supporting Ukraine also reaffirms U.S. leadership in the fight for democratic values, justice, and the rule of law on a global scale.
By backing Ukraine, the United States reinforces its international authority, demonstrating its commitment to upholding global order and ensuring stability worldwide. This, in turn, enhances trust in the U.S. among its allies and strengthens alliances with other democratic nations.
In conclusion, supporting Ukraine is not only essential for winning this war but also for safeguarding global peace, stability, and democratic values in the future. It is an investment in a world where aggression and human rights violations do not go unpunished, and where every nation has the right to independence and democracy.
