Security Conference on Ukraine Held in Washington

In Washington, on February 21, the three‑day Ukraine Security Conference 2025, organized by The Alexander Hamilton Society in partnership with the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University, kicked off. The event is dedicated to issues of Ukraine’s security, transatlantic cooperation, post-war reconstruction, and the effectiveness of sanctions.

This was reported by The Alexander Hamilton Society at GWU.

The conference was opened by the advisor of the Embassy of Ukraine in the USA, Kateryna Smahliy. In her speech, she emphasized the importance of academic diplomacy in building international support for Ukraine.

Over the course of three days, participants will discuss key issues, including:

  • Transatlantic security: the role of NATO and Ukraine;
  • Post-war reconstruction: the country’s rebuilding strategy;
  • Energy security: the reliability of the energy system;
  • Economic sanctions and their impact on the war.

 On February 20, a screening of the documentary film "Antarctica: War Diaries" took place as a prelude to the conference. The main program unfolded on February 21 and 22. On the first day, leading experts in international politics, economics, and security participated in expert discussions. The following day, practical seminars were held to formulate political recommendations for the Ukrainian government.

Additionally, the conference featured a photo exhibition by Ukrainian photographer Serhiy Glotov, dedicated to the landscapes of Ukraine, Antarctica, and the Ukrainian research station "Akademik Vernadskyi." The exhibition will run from February 21 to 28.

Key speakers at the conference included:

  • Richard Holtzapple (U.S. Department of State, former Deputy Head of the U.S. Mission to NATO);
  • Yan Brzezinski (Atlantic Council, former Deputy Secretary of Defense for Europe and NATO policy);
  • Alina Polyakova (President and CEO of the Center for European Political Analysis);
  • Richard Neff (Columbia University, expert on global anti-corruption policy);
  • Max Gruenig (environmental policy expert).

The event also served as a platform for the presentation of the AHS at GW Working Group, which introduced its own political recommendations for the Ukrainian government.
