On the occasion of the National Flag Day and the 34th anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence, Ukrainian communities in different parts of the USA organized festive events, concerts, and festivals that united people around culture, traditions, and charity. Even thousands of kilometers from home, the unity of Ukrainians remains unwavering. Each event carries, among loud songs and powerful applause, the main thing: help to those who are currently fighting for the future of Ukraine.
Vyshyvanka Run – Washington
The traditional “Vyshyvanka Run” event dedicated to Ukraine’s Independence Day was held in the US capital. The event, launched in 2014 and organized by United Help Ukraine together with the Ukrainian community, gathered over a hundred participants. Oresta Starak, a representative of the Embassy of Ukraine in the USA, also joined the event.
“123 incredible supporters of Ukraine – Americans and Ukrainians together – came out to celebrate Ukraine’s Independence Day. Your energy, smiles and support are invaluable as we continue to stand for freedom and resilience,” the organizers said.
Participants could choose between a 1km or 5km distance – running, walking or cycling, but the main thing was the sense of community. The atmosphere of the event was festive: children, adults and entire families ran in embroidered shirts, turning an ordinary Saturday morning into a vibrant celebration of culture and solidarity.
Concert extravaganza in support of the defenders – Uniondale, New York
A gala concert “Ukrainian Independence Day” was held on Independence Day. The celebration, organized by the UCCA-LI Chapter, took place on August 23 at the St. Volodymyr Parish Center. Guests were treated to free food, a cash bar was open, and artists performed.
The program was decorated with performances by Shanis and Band, the duet “Yaroslav-Na”, as well as a show of designer outfits from designer Anna Bo. The highlight of the evening was a charity lottery - all funds will be directed to the Revived Soldiers Ukraine fund. The concert was attended by Ukrainian military personnel in need of prosthetics and rehabilitation.
Dumplings, dancing and a stove in the park - Seattle, Washington
The “Creative Workshop in the Open Air” project in Ravenna Park was organized by volunteers Alla Svystun, together with Vira Duzenko and Kateryna Gorenko, held an event to celebrate Flag Day and Independence Day of Ukraine by raising funds for a medical vehicle for the 25th separate airborne brigade.
“Drawn dumplings and pies earned almost $2,000 at a small event yesterday. This is another contribution to the purchase of a pickup truck for the 25th separate airborne brigade. Our food is, of course, international and the best motivator to donate. And our Ukrainian dress, embroidered shirts, are also profitable to work with. Everyone noted the Ukrainian flavor, and one American woman was all about the towel that I was recently given in Sakhnovshchyna. She didn’t sell it. Holy,” the organizers shared.
In addition to the treats, the community plans to launch a regular “Creative Workshop in the Open Air” with Ukrainian dishes, crafts, and traditional dances.
Ukrainian Culture Festival – Portland, Oregon
A large-scale “Ukrainian Day Festival” organized by the Ukrainian Foundation was held in Westmoreland Park. Visitors were treated to live music from Ukrainian and local bands, traditional dances, national cuisine, art and craft exhibitions, children’s workshops, contests, and entertainment with prizes.
“It was an incredible day! Thank you all for making this a great event,” concluded the organizers of the festival, which has become a Portland landmark and brings together thousands of guests each year to enjoy the rich heritage of Ukrainian culture.
Raising the Flag in the Heart of Texas – Austin, Texas
In the capital of Texas, the community gathered for a ceremonial raising of the Ukrainian flag in front of the Capitol building.
“Today in Austin, in front of the Texas Capitol, the Austin community once again raised the blue and yellow flag. It flies not only over a free Ukraine, but also in our hearts, wherever we are. I think of all of you with pride and love – those who fight, who hold the rear, who work every day for victory and the future. We are with you, even across the ocean. Glory to Ukraine!” said volunteer Kate Voynova.
The city also hosted a large rally in support of Ukraine, with performances by activist Daria Ledesma and singer Oleksandra Pelita. The event was organized by Austin TX Ukrainians.
