Ukrainian Community of New Jersey Celebrates Feast of the Presentation of the Lord

In the state of New Jersey, according to the Julian calendar, the Ukrainian Orthodox community celebrated the Presentation of the Lord. The service was held at the St. Andrew’s Memorial Church and this year coincided with the Sunday of the Last Judgment, which is dedicated to the theme of human responsibility for one’s actions.

This was reported by St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial

As reported, the festive service was led by the rector of the church, Father Vasyl Pasakas, with the concelebration of Father Ivan Lyshik and Deacon Andriy Akulenko. During the service, a passage from the Gospel about the meeting of the righteous Simeon with the baby Jesus in the temple was read.

The words were also heard: “For I was hungry, and you gave me food…” (Matt. 25:35), as a reminder of the importance of helping others.

In his sermon, Father Vasyl drew attention to the combination of the holiday with the Sunday of the Last Judgment.

“We know how to dress nicely, decorate our cars and homes, and take care of our physical beauty. However, do we decorate our souls with good deeds just as diligently?” he noted.

As it is specified, for several weeks before the holiday, the children of the parish made street candles from beeswax. After the service, they were consecrated and distributed to parishioners. In the Christian tradition, a candle symbolizes light and faith.

According to the participants, the event became an opportunity for the community to come together and reflect on personal responsibility and mutual support
