The international situation is escalating simultaneously on several fronts – from the front in Ukraine to the Middle East. Analysts warn of possible preparations by Russia for a large-scale offensive, while the US is expanding its military presence in the Persian Gulf region. Against this backdrop, Iran is threatening to strike critical infrastructure, which increases the risks of a global energy crisis. Diplomatic efforts are underway in parallel, including negotiations between Ukraine and the US, which should determine the further course of the war.
Russia is preparing a large-scale offensive on the front – ISW
According to analysts, the Kremlin is considering the possibility of a large-scale offensive along the entire front line, stretching over 1,200 kilometers. These are potential actions aimed primarily at capturing additional territories in the Donetsk region. Amid the disagreements between the Western allies, Moscow is likely trying to seize the moment and increase military pressure. With the approach of the warm season and the drying of the soil, the pace of hostilities may increase, which creates the prerequisites for the intensification of offensive operations.
Analysts also note that Russian troops have already intensified artillery shelling and drone attacks in order to exhaust Ukrainian defenses. At the same time, Ukrainian forces are conducting counterattacks in the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhia regions, trying to disrupt preparations for a possible offensive. Special emphasis is placed on the intensification of strikes on the enemy's logistics, equipment and personnel, which complicates the transfer of reserves. According to estimates, such actions may force the Russian command to balance between deterring Ukrainian counterattacks and concentrating forces for an offensive in other directions.
Trump-Xi summit postponed due to war with Iran
Preparations for the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping have been called into question due to the aggravation of the situation around Iran. According to sources, the US administration does not plan to set a new date for the summit until the active phase of the conflict in the Middle East is over. At the same time, the White House officially denies a direct connection between the war and the postponement of the talks, calling such reports “fake news”. Despite this, Donald Trump himself admitted that the meeting was being postponed due to the current circumstances, remarkingthat “we are at war now”.
The summit was expected to be an important stage in stabilizing trade relations between the US and China after previous agreements. The talks were supposed to consolidate steps to avoid a new escalation of the trade war, in particular on issues of tariffs and access to resources. However, delaying the meeting creates risks for the fragile balance in relations between the two states. Experts say the lack of direct dialogue between leaders could exacerbate instability at a time of global tension.
The US is preparing for a possible deployment of ground troops to Iran
The Pentagon is developing detailed plans for the possible deployment of US ground troops to Iran. According to sources, the military command has already submitted relevant requests to prepare for such a scenario, although a final decision has not yet been made. US President Donald Trump has publicly denied the intention to send troops, but left room for maneuver, stating:
“No, I’m not sending troops anywhere… If I were, I certainly wouldn’t tell you.”
At the same time, the US is deploying additional forces to the region, including units of the 82nd Airborne Division and the Marine Corps. This includes thousands of soldiers and several warships, which are already heading to the Middle East. The military is also working on scenarios for capturing Iranian military personnel in the event of a ground operation. These steps indicate an expansion of the options for further action, even despite public statements that there are no plans for escalation.
Iran threatens infrastructure strikes after Trump ultimatum
Iran said its readiness to strike critical infrastructure in the Middle East in response to an ultimatum from US President Donald Trump. The American leader threatened to destroy Iranian power plants if Tehran does not open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours. In response, the Iranian military command said that it would attack energy, information and water facilities of the US and its allies in the region. This was a sharp escalation of rhetoric against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict.
The statements by the parties indicate an increase in the risk of a larger escalation in the region, which is of critical importance for the global energy market. The Strait of Hormuz is a key oil transportation route, and any blockage of it could have global consequences. At the same time, attacks on Iran’s energy infrastructure would not necessarily immediately affect global supplies, but could deepen the conflict. The rhetoric on both sides demonstrates a readiness to further escalate the situation.
Ukraine and the United States continue talks to end the war
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said on the continuation of negotiations between the Ukrainian and American delegations on ending the war. According to him, the meeting has already taken place with the participation of US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, and the next round of negotiations is scheduled for the next day.
“Our team is now in America, there was already a meeting today… It is important for all of us in the world that diplomacy continues and we are trying to end this war – Russia’s war against Ukraine. Nobody needs war,” the president noted.
The head of state stressed that the key issue remains the readiness of the Russian side to actually end the war.
“And the most important thing is to understand how much the Russian side is ready to go to actually end the war and how much they are ready to do it honestly and with dignity,” he added.
The head of the negotiating team, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov, reported that the parties focused on agreeing on approaches to achieving practical results. The Ukrainian delegation continues to work with American partners to determine further steps in the negotiation process.
