War in Ukraine, Criticism of the UN, Russian Espionage: New Challenges to Global Security

The global security system is facing simultaneous challenges on multiple fronts. The United States has openly criticized the United Nations for its inability to influence Russia’s war against Ukraine, while continuing to support Kyiv. At the same time, tensions around Iran are rising, already impacting energy markets. In this context, Russia is intensifying its espionage activities in an attempt to compensate for its technological lag.

U.S. Criticizes the UN for Failing to Stop Russia’s War Against Ukraine

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said at the UN Security Council that the organization is failing to fulfill its core function—preventing wars. He emphasized that the inability to stop Russia’s war against Ukraine is a clear example of this crisis of effectiveness. According to him, the UN too often focuses on secondary issues instead of taking real action. Landau urged Security Council members to assess whether their statements contribute to negotiations or, on the contrary, hinder them.

The American diplomat stressed that the United States continues to work with both sides to achieve peace and expects readiness for compromise. He noted that the war has far-reaching consequences for the global order, affecting the economy and security of many countries. Landau also expressed hope that during the U.S. presidency of the Security Council, the organization would move toward practical steps. He emphasized that it is important for peace in Ukraine to be achieved with the participation of the UN—not in spite of it.

Russia Intensifies Espionage Activity in the U.S., CPD Reports

Russian intelligence services are increasing espionage activity in Florida, a key hub for U.S. military and space infrastructure. According to Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation (CPD), agents posing as tourists attempted to access SpaceX facilities and establish contacts with military personnel and officials. This is described as systematic activity aimed at gathering data on vulnerabilities in defense infrastructure. The region hosts numerous military bases, commands, and naval facilities.

The Center notes that this activity is linked to the crisis in Russia’s space industry and efforts to compensate for technological shortcomings. Russia is increasingly relying on espionage and technology theft to gain access to advanced developments. Similar attempts to collect information—particularly through representatives of the space sector—have been recorded before, indicating a systematic nature of intelligence operations targeting the United States.

U.S. Continues to Supply Ukraine with Weapons and Intelligence – Rutte

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte saidthat the United States maintains a key role in supporting Ukraine, particularly through intelligence sharing and the supply of weapons. According to him, this is done in coordination with European allies, who are also involved in providing resources. Rutte emphasized that Washington is ensuring Ukraine has everything necessary to conduct military operations and that pressure on Russia is being applied jointly with allies.

He added that the Trump administration is actively working to achieve a peace agreement. According to Rutte, the U.S. president has managed to move negotiations forward and continues to exert pressure on both sides. He noted that President Zelenskyy is demonstrating readiness for agreements, while the key task remains convincing Russia to make concessions.

U.S. Urges EU to Quickly Adopt Trade Agreement

U.S. Ambassador to the EU Andrew Puzder called on European institutions not to delay ratification of a trade agreement with the United States. According to him, the deal will open opportunities for deeper cooperation in energy, technology, and artificial intelligence. He warned that delays could lead to economic consequences, including loss of priority market access or increased tariffs. The agreement предусматриває significant purchases of American energy resources by EU countries.

Puzder emphasized that implementing the agreement serves the interests of both sides and will strengthen transatlantic relations. He also noted that Europe needs additional energy resources and should reduce regulatory barriers to their import. Political considerations, he said, should not hinder economically beneficial decisions. Washington expects swift approval of the agreement from the European side.

Trump Claims Progress in Talks with Iran, Tehran Denies

US President Donald Trump said that “very successful and productive” talks with Iran had taken place regarding the situation in the Middle East. He said that, in connection with this, he had ordered a five-day delay of strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure. According to him, the negotiations were “deep, detailed, and constructive” and are expected to continue in the near future. The decision to pause strikes is linked to expectations of progress from these contacts.

However, Iran denied that any negotiations took place and stated that there had been no contacts with the United States. Officials in Tehran claim that Washington stepped back under the threat of retaliatory strikes. Iranian representatives also warned that energy markets would remain unstable. Following these statements, global oil prices dropped sharply, reflecting the market’s high sensitivity to political signals.
