Easter “Haiivky” in Palatine: Ukrainian Tradition Brings Community and Generations Together

In the city of Palatine, traditional Easter haiivky took place, annually bringing together the Ukrainian community around shared cultural heritage. The festive event was held at the Immaculate Conception Church and became a vivid example of preserving Ukrainian traditions in the diaspora.

This was reported by Radio UA Chicago.

Haiivky are ancient ritual songs and games performed on Easter after the праздничної літургії. They symbolize the arrival of spring, renewal of life, and unity of the community. This very atmosphere was recreated this year: immediately after the service, the churchyard filled with singing, children’s laughter, and movement, and later the celebration continued in the auditorium of SUM (Ukrainian Youth Association).

For the fifth consecutive year, the event was organized by members of the “Ethnos” ensemble under the direction of Nataliia Fihel, together with Vasylyna Pasternak and Inna Kaniuka. Preparations began well in advance: the organizers created decorations by hand, wove ribbon garlands, crafted ornaments, and also prepared traditional treats — baking 237 dough birds for children.

The program was rich and diverse. Members of the “Ethnos” ensemble, dressed in traditional costumes from different regions of Ukraine, recreated elements of folk culture through songs, dances, and ritual performances. This created the effect of a “living tradition” that is not only demonstrated but also passed on to future generations.

A special atmosphere was added by the bandura trio “Alvia.” Their live singing and performance became one of the key artistic highlights of the program. The event also featured the church choir led by Ihor Shumskyi and children’s groups “Vodohrai” and “Anhelyk,” directed by Mariia Kyrychenko. The children’s performances were especially touching and highlighted the role of the younger generation in preserving traditions.

At the heart of the celebration were the haiivky themselves — songs, circle dances, and games that participants did not simply perform but truly experienced. Experienced participants actively involved newcomers, passing on knowledge and skills. Together, they formed a symbolic circle of unity, a defining feature of this tradition.

Organizers emphasize that such events hold special importance for Ukrainian communities abroad. They not only help preserve cultural identity but also foster a sense of unity, support, and belonging to Ukrainian tradition.

The festive atmosphere was enriched by children’s smiles, active participation of families, and sincere intergenerational communication.

At the conclusion, the organizers thanked everyone who contributed to preparing and holding the event.
