Two leading American universities—Florida State University and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign—have joined the Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies.
The announcement was made by the Посольство України у Сполучених Штатах, which emphasized that the coalition's continued expansion will strengthen Ukrainian studies and promote Ukrainian culture, history, and language within the American academic community.
The Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies was established two years ago at the initiative of First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska. During the international conference "Ukraine in the World," held in Lviv, it was announced that the network now includes 100 educational institutions from around the world. The coalition aims to strengthen international cooperation in Ukrainian studies, support academic research, and expand the teaching of Ukrainian-related disciplines.
The Embassy of Ukraine noted that it will continue working with American universities to advance Ukrainian studies across the United States. Diplomats expressed special appreciation to Florida State University for its consistent support of Ukraine. The university—the oldest and largest public university in the state of Florida—is currently the only higher education institution in the state that offers courses in the Ukrainian language.
Following the start of russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, the university established the Ukraine Task Force, which supports Ukrainian students and scholars, develops academic partnerships, and promotes knowledge of Ukrainian history, culture, and statehood in the United States.
The addition of Florida State University and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to the Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies marks another important step toward strengthening Ukraine’s academic presence in the United States and expanding international cooperation in education and research.
