The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America called on communities to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Ukraine’s independence and to continue supporting the country. The statement also mentions planned proclamations, Ukrainian flag-raising ceremonies, and community events in American cities.

UCCA recalled that on December 1, 1991, more than 90% of Ukrainians confirmed independence in a nationwide referendum. The organization noted that Ukraine continues to defend its independence in the war today, while Ukrainians in the United States support the country through humanitarian programs, volunteer initiatives, and assistance to its defenders.
The statement separately highlights the role of the Ukrainian-American community, which for more than 150 years has established churches, schools, newspapers, cultural, professional, and civic organizations in the United States and preserved Ukrainian identity across generations.
UCCA notes that this August, its branches across the country will work with state and local authorities to commemorate the anniversary. Planned events include the issuance of relevant proclamations, ceremonial Ukrainian flag raisings, and community gatherings.
“The blue-and-yellow flags that will fly over American cities and state capitals this August carry with them the memory of those who fought for Ukraine’s independence before 1991, the joy of those who witnessed its restoration, and the determination of those who are defending it today,” the statement said.
UCCA also emphasized the continuation of humanitarian support for Ukraine. According to the organization, through the work of its branches, partners, and volunteers, ambulances, medical equipment, transportation, protective and winter gear, water-supply equipment, as well as emergency assistance and other forms of support are being provided to Ukraine.
In its statement, UCCA honors the memory of Ukraine’s fallen defenders, expresses support for the military personnel who continue to defend the country, and remembers Ukrainians who have been forced to leave their homes because of the war.
The organization calls for maintaining this commitment in the future so that future generations inherit a Ukraine that is “independent, peaceful, united, and free.”
