Today, August 24, Ukraine celebrates National Flag Day and Independence Day. This year marks a special milestone: 35 years of Ukraine’s independence.
“Thirty-five years of our independence. Thirty-five years since the Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine was adopted. Ukrainians have preserved the independence of their state. And we will certainly defend Ukraine’s independence. There is no doubt about that. Ukraine will always be independent.
Ukrainians will not be paving stones beneath the feet of tsars and leaders. Ukrainians will not be a bargaining chip in disputes between capitals. Ukrainians will not submit to what they do not believe in, and they certainly will not abandon their dream — the dream of living, the dream of living independently,” President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on the occasion of the holiday.
Thirty-five years of our freedom, resilience, and struggle for the right to be ourselves. During this time, Ukraine has traveled a path that has forever changed us and the entire world. And today, we continue to defend our independence — on the front line, in our communities, through culture, sports, and the media. For the media, this is also a responsibility — to tell the truth, preserve people’s voices, and document our history. May the coming year bring Ukraine victory, a just and lasting peace, as well as a safe and prosperous future.
