On August 24, 2026, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson issued a Special Recognition to the Ukrainian community in Dallas, marking the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence with an official city document bearing his signature and the City of Dallas seal.
The recognition notes Ukraine’s declaration of independence on August 24, 1991, addresses Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and recalls the Dallas City Council’s unanimous resolution of March 9, 2022, condemning Russia’s invasion and calling for peace and an end to the war.
The document also recognizes the contributions Ukrainian Americans make to the cultural fabric of the United States and the City of Dallas, while highlighting shared values of freedom, democracy, and the rule of law.
Olena Jacobs, president of the Ukrainian Cultural Club of Dallas, said the recognition matters for several reasons: it acknowledges Ukrainians as an equal part of the Dallas community, sends a political and diplomatic signal recognizing Ukraine as an independent state — particularly during the ongoing war — and carries a more personal meaning.
“It inspires our community,” Jacobs said.
Chrystya Geremesz, founding member of the Ukrainian American Society of Texas, also emphasized the importance of the city’s support.
“It’s important that the Ukrainian community has the support from one of the largest cities in North Texas,” she said. “The City of Dallas also wants to support Ukraine, and that is at the top of the list.”
Tamara Velsher, president of the U.S.–Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce, said the recognition gives Ukrainians courage, strength, and hope.
“It reminds our community that we are not alone and encourages us to continue standing strong and never give up.”
