Ukrainian Expressionism in Washington: Vasyl Khmeliuk's Works Presented at Ukraine House

An exhibition of works by Vasyl Khmeliuk, one of the first Ukrainian Expressionists, has opened at Ukraine House in Washington, DC. The exhibition includes 23 paintings, four drawings, and rare editions of his little-known poems.

This was reported by Ukraine House.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States, Oksana Markarova, who thanked curator Alex Demko for organizing the exhibition.

"Khmeliuk's life reflects the fate of many Ukrainian figures of the early twentieth century: service in the UPR army, escape from Soviet occupation, and creative recognition in Paris. According to Markarova, his work symbolizes Ukraine's struggle for freedom and preservation of its cultural heritage, especially now that the country is defending its sovereignty. After all, Vasyl Khmeliuk, one of the first Ukrainian Expressionists, conveyed through his art emotions, depth and a world view that still fascinate us today.

“Сьогодні, його "Today, his incredible life and fate once again remind all our friends why Ukraine must win and why it is time to redouble our efforts and support to make this victory a victory for the entire democratic world," the Ambassador said.“, – зазначила посол.

Ukraine House, for its part, noted that the exhibition underscores the importance of preserving Ukraine's cultural heritage at a time when the country is fighting for its independence. The exhibition will run through mid-December, providing an opportunity for the American public to experience the power of Ukrainian art and to join in supporting Ukraine.
