Ukrainian Women's Union of America Donates Unique Rare Publications and Archival Materials to Kyiv

The Ukrainian Women's Union of America has donated a collection of rare publications and archival materials to the Museum of the Ukrainian Diaspora in Kyiv. The collection includes the children's magazine Veselka, the illustrated magazine Terem, and other important periodicals of the Ukrainian Diaspora. The donation also includes a unique photo album of the UWA Newark chapter from the 1950s and 1960s and a book about the sculptor Serhiy Lytvynenko.

This was report by the Museum of Ukrainian Diaspora located in Kyiv.

"Recently, the Museum of the Ukrainian Diaspora received a gift of a collection of rare publications and archival materials from the Ukrainian Women's Union of America. Among them are copies of The Rainbow (A Children's Magazine), a monthly children's magazine published in 1954-1994 as a supplement to the oldest Ukrainian newspaper in America, Svoboda," the statement said.

According to the museum, the 1966 and 1967 issues introduce readers to Oleksandr Oles's poem "Vodianychok," Olga Mak's fairy tale for older children "How Oleh Conquered Tsargrad" (illustrated by Ukrainian diaspora artist Petro Andrusiv), and Roman Zavadovych's historical fairy tales "Bohdan the Cossack Character" and "Gotza Drala." The latter two tales were illustrated by another famous Ukrainian artist, Petro Kholodnyi.

In addition, the Museum received from the Union an illustrated magazine of the Ukrainian Cultural Institute in America, Terem and Visti. The magazine covered the cultural life of Minneapolis in the 1960s. It included a photo of the mayor of Newark (New Jersey, USA) with representatives of the Ukrainian Women's Union of America holding a large Ukrainian flag.

"The back of the photo is dated January 1966. It was preceded by a landmark event for the Ukrainian diaspora: a speech by Newark Mayor Hugh J. Addonizio on the occasion of the Independence Day of the Ukrainian People's Republic on January 22. Today, the holiday is known as Ukraine Unity Day," the museum said.

"We recently donated a collection of rare diaspora publications and archival materials to the Museum of the Ukrainian Diaspora in Kyiv, expanding its collection and supporting the study of Ukrainian culture. The donation includes a unique photo album of the 28th Division of the UWA in Newark, New Jersey, with original photographs from the 1950s and 1960s. One of the photos shows members of the organization in front of the Taras Shevchenko Memorial in Washington, DC. We are proud to add to the collection the album "Serhiy Lytvynenko. Sculptor," published in 1956 and edited by Sviatoslav Hordynskyi, with personal photographs of the artist and articles by leading art historians," UNWLA said.

The collection also includes a commemorative book on the 30th anniversary of the death of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky (published in 1974), the catalog "Ukrainians at Harvard" in 1977.
