In a special statement, U.S. President Joe Biden honored the memory of the victims of the Holodomor in Ukraine and expressed his support for the Ukrainian people in their struggle for freedom and a Euro-Atlantic future. The statement was released by the White House on Saturday, November 25.
This was reported by White House.
"Ninety-one years ago, Joseph Stalin and the Soviet regime organized the Holodomor, a forced and selective famine that killed millions of Ukrainians. We remember the men, women, and children who died during the Holodomor," Biden said.
The president praised the courage of the survivors and their descendants who were able to build an independent and democratic Ukraine despite attempts to destroy its national identity.
Referring to Russia's ongoing aggression against Ukraine, Biden stressed that its attempts to wipe Ukraine off the world map have failed.
"Russia has failed in that effort. Kyiv remains free, thanks in part to the United States and more than 50 other countries that stand ready to provide Ukraine with the assistance it needs to defend itself," the White House chief said.
The American leader addressed a message to the Ukrainian people:
"The United States honors your past and supports your present. On this day, we reaffirm our commitment to support Ukraine's continued defense of its freedom, its pursuit of justice, and its path to the Euro-Atlantic future it has chosen. The courage and strength of the Ukrainian people will prevail".
Historical Background
In the twentieth century, Ukrainians experienced three Holodomors: 1921-1923, 1932-1933, and 1946-1947. The largest was the Holodomor of 1932-1933, which is recognized as a genocide of the Ukrainian people committed by the Stalinist regime.
