Ukrainian Traditions Week in the United States: Events to attend

The pre-Christmas season is not only a time for carols, colorful parades and parties, but also an opportunity to participate in the unique activities of the Ukrainian community in the United States, which this year are focused on promoting traditions and helping Ukraine. Here are some of the most exciting events to attend.

Ukrainian Winter Festival Koliada in Seattle

On December 21, from 12:00 to 19:00, the Polish Home Association (1714 18th Ave, Seattle, WA) hosted Koliada Winter Fest, a festive event organized by the Ukrainian Cultural Center Toloka, HraiMore, and the Ukrainian School Vyrii. The event is designed to promote Ukrainian winter traditions, unite the community and help those affected by the war in Ukraine.

Guests will experience the true atmosphere of Koliada, an ancient winter tradition that unites people through songs, dances and stories. This is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the magic of the winter solstice and Christmas. The festival will feature Christmas carols (traditional songs in various languages), traditional Ukrainian winter delicacies, performances by dance groups from Ukraine and Poland, and Ukrainian dance workshops for everyone. There will also be a holiday fair and master classes on creating original Christmas tree decorations.

A portion of the funds raised during the event will be used to help Ukrainians affected by the war.

"Ukrainian Nutcracker" by Voloshky School

On December 21, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the Abington Friends School (575 Washington Lane, Jenkintown, PA) in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, the Voloshky Ukrainian Dance School will present The Ukrainian Nutcracker, a special interpretation of the classic ballet. Organizers promise that the production will impress guests with colorful costumes, incredible choreography and unique Ukrainian cultural motifs.

This year famous Ukrainian dance ensembles will perform on the same stage: Voloshky Ensemble and Syzokryli Ensemble, as well as other special guests.

A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to children affected by the war in Ukraine to help them through this difficult time.


Christmas Bazaar in New Jersey

On December 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church will host a Christmas Bazaar at the Ukrainian American Cultural Center of New Jersey (60 North Jefferson Road, Whippany, NJ).

The Ukrainian community will find a wide selection of Ukrainian and holiday handmade goods, jewelry and other products for purchase. In addition, the fair will feature homemade Ukrainian dishes and pastries, which will also be available for purchase.

Christmas Concert in Birmingham

On December 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Unity of Birmingham (2803 Highland Ave, Birmingham, Alabama), Alabama United Hearts For Ukraine and Unity of Birmingham will host a Christmas Concert.

This festive evening will be a unique event that combines the charm of Ukrainian Christmas traditions and melodies. The event is created for everyone who wants to feel the atmosphere of Christmas in a cultural diversity.

During the event guests will be able to enjoy festive music, immerse themselves in the traditions of Ukrainian Christmas and create unforgettable memories in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

The event will also feature a sale of homemade pastries. All funds raised during this event will be used to support important initiatives for Ukraine.
