The Assembly of Ukrainian Christian Churches of Washington State has welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump's call to hold Russia accountable for its international war crimes. The appeal was made public immediately after the inauguration ceremony, which took place on January 20, 2025, in the Capitol building.
This was reported by Council of Ukrainian Christian Churches of Washington.
"Many of our fellow citizens hope that your presidency will be marked by a just end to Russia's global threat, armed aggression, and state-sponsored terrorism, which is real not only for Ukraine but for the rest of the democratic world," the statement said.
The Ukrainian church leaders expressed hope that Trump's election to the presidency will not only promote economic growth, strengthening of borders and freedom of expression of conservative views, but will also be marked by bringing the Russian leadership to justice for crimes against Ukraine.
"We believe that you will be able not only to stop the war, but also to bring the Russian leadership to justice for numerous war crimes, genocide of Ukrainians, and crimes against humanity," the address said.
The faith leaders also emphasized the importance of government programs, including United for Ukraine (U4U) and Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which ensure the legal stay of Ukrainians in the United States and protect them from the consequences of war. They emphasized the need to support the families of Ukrainians affected by Russian aggression.
"Churches in Washington State continue to care for the families of Ukrainians who have fled the war. We pray that your presidency will be successful in all its good intentions, and that God's wisdom will help you as you make important public decisions," the religious leaders concluded.
