In a recent interview with Fox News, Donald Trump stated that he has always maintained a tough stance on Russia. He recalled the sanctions he imposed, the halt of Nord Stream 2, and the transfer of Javelin anti-tank systems to Ukraine. However, Trump also noted that he "gets along well" with Putin, claiming that the Russian dictator acknowledges that no U.S. politician has been tougher on the Kremlin than Trump. Elon Musk once again criticized his opinion on the war in Ukraine, this time suggesting sanctions against the ten wealthiest Ukrainian oligarchs. He believes this would help reduce spending on initiatives like the deployment of a massive Ukrainian flag in front of the White House. At the same time, Musk insists that providing Ukraine with Starlink was his personal challenge to Putin. However, his claims that Ukraine is "inevitably losing" due to the prolonged war sparked a wave of criticism from pro-Ukrainian activists and politicians.
Musk Calls for U.S. Withdrawal from NATO and an End to European Defense Funding
Musk also supported the idea of the U.S. withdrawing from NATO statingthat America should not be funding Europe’s defense. His words coincided with an NBC report that Donald Trump is discussing a potential shift in the U.S. approach to the Alliance. Trump has repeatedly stated that he would not defend countries that fail to meet their financial commitments. However, U.S. law prohibits the president from unilaterally withdrawing from NATO without congressional approval, making this idea merely another bold statement for now.
U.S. Blocks Canada’s Initiative to Combat Russia’s "Shadow Fleet" in the G7
The United States has vetoed Canada’s G7 proposal to create a working group to monitor sanctions violations by Russia's "shadow fleet." According to BloombergWashington is simultaneously pushing for a tougher stance on China while suggesting a softer approach toward Russia. The U.S. is also insisting on removing mentions of sanctions from the G7’s final statement. This has raised concerns among allies, who believe the Trump administration is easing pressure on the Kremlin.
Ukraine Discusses Peace Plan with International Partners
Despite the West’s contradictory statements, Ukraine continues working on diplomatic initiatives. Head of the Presidential Office Andriy Yermak met with British Prime Minister’s National Security Advisor Jonathan Powell to discuss the first steps toward peace. These include stopping attacks on civilian and energy infrastructure, releasing prisoners, and strengthening sanctions against Russia. Additionally, the Ukrainian delegation plans to discuss military and financial aid during negotiations in Saudi Arabia.
