Boston–Dnipro: Joint Surgery Overcomes Phantom Pain in Wounded Soldier

The International Medical Partnership Program, launched in 2023 at the Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen on the initiative of Olena Zelenska, continues to deliver tangible results for Ukrainian patients. One vivid example is the cooperation between the Regional Family Health Medical Center in Dnipro and the world-renowned Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Recently, a 46-year-old serviceman who had lost both legs at the front turned to doctors in Dnipro with a severe case of phantom limb pain. This exhausting condition, in which a person continues to experience intense pain in a limb that is no longer there, often becomes a serious trial even for the most resilient patients. Thanks to the knowledge and techniques Ukrainian doctors acquired during training with their U.S. partners, they were able to perform a unique surgery that addressed the root cause of the pain.

Preparation for the procedure included joint review of the clinical case with American colleagues under the guidance of Professor Gennadiy Fuzaylov of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. During the operation, the Ukrainian team remained in live video contact with Boston, receiving recommendations and coordination in real time. Surgery was performed on both limbs simultaneously, which made it possible to stop the persistent pain, and the patient has already begun rehabilitation.

Massachusetts General Hospital, in partnership with the Heal Ukraine Group initiative, actively supports Ukrainian medical professionals by organizing telemedicine consultations, training programs, and fellowships. Doctors from Ukraine gain access to advanced treatment methods, which they then implement in their own hospitals. According to program participants, such an exchange of knowledge and experience provides not only medical but also moral benefits, as Ukrainian doctors feel that in the most difficult times they are not left alone with their challenges.

To date, 67 memoranda have been signed between medical institutions in Ukraine and 24 countries worldwide, including the United States. Behind each agreement are real stories—doctors sharing expertise and patients gaining a chance at a new life. In the case of the Dnipro serviceman, this cooperation became yet another proof that the partnership between Ukraine and the United States can change destinies and save lives, even in the darkest of times.
