The Ukrainian Women’s Union of America (UWA) has announced the finalist for the prestigious 2025 UWA Vovk Foundation Scholarship. He is Nazar Kalynyuk, a master’s student in electrical and computer engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
This was reported by the press service of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America to Vilni Media.
In his application, Nazar Kalynyuk emphasized the importance of technologies that emerged during the war – in particular, drones, electronic warfare systems and secure communications.
“Kalynyuk’s academic interest in computer architecture and circuit design reflects his deep commitment to using technology to rebuild Ukraine and ensure its long-term security,” the UWA said.
He also wants these innovations to become the basis for creating an independent Ukrainian defense sector.
“By localizing the design and production of defense technologies, we can reduce Ukraine’s dependence on foreign suppliers and build a more autonomous defense industry. I want to be part of a new generation of Ukrainian engineers who not only help rebuild the country’s infrastructure, but also contribute to the development of a technologically advanced and self-sufficient national defense sector,” said Kalyniuk.
In addition to his studies, Nazar is actively involved in the life of the Ukrainian diaspora – as a member of the Union of Ukrainian Youth (CYM) and a volunteer at Ukrainian festivals. He believes that the global Ukrainian diaspora plays an important role in preserving the cultural identity and supporting the sovereignty of Ukraine.
“By staying connected to my roots and using my skills to support others, I will continue to serve my community,” the fellow emphasized.
The UWA Vovk Foundation Scholarship supports outstanding Ukrainian students pursuing higher education in the United States who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership qualities, and a strong commitment to the future of Ukraine. Through this program, UWA continues its 100-year mission to empower Ukrainian women and youth through education, cultural preservation, and civic engagement.
