Illinois Officially Declares August Ukrainian Independence Month

August 2026 has been officially declared Ukrainian Independence Month in the state of Illinois. The proclamation honors the steadfastness of the Ukrainian people, the more than 150-year contribution of Ukrainian Americans to the development of the state, and calls on communities to join in adopting similar decisions at the local level.

This was reported by Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, Illinois Division.

The document also honors the Ukrainian community, which works to strengthen local communities, preserve Ukrainian cultural heritage, support Ukraine in its fight for freedom, and help build the United States as its new homeland.

According to the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, the Illinois Division succeeded in achieving the adoption of the statewide proclamation.

After the decision was made public, the organization urged Illinois residents to contact their city, town, township, and county officials to pass similar local proclamations on Ukrainian Independence Month. A draft letter of appeal has been prepared for this purpose, which is recommended to be sent to local officials, and if there is no response, to re-apply next week or call.

The message emphasizes that support for Ukraine must remain in the spotlight.

“Keeping Ukraine in the information space is not just important – it is vital. Every proclamation, every conversation, and every act of advocacy helps keep the world’s attention on Ukraine and strengthens support for its struggle for freedom,” the Ukrainian Congressional Committee of America noted.

The adoption of the proclamation was also announced by Maria Klymchak, executive director of the Kyiv-Mohyla Foundation in America. She noted that the governor's decision is a recognition of the indomitability of the Ukrainian people and the many years of contribution of Ukrainian Americans to the development of the state.

According to her, the document is also a tribute to those who preserve Ukrainian culture, support Ukraine in its fight for freedom, and at the same time help build the United States as their new homeland.

"Each such decision is a voice in support of Ukraine, another opportunity to remind American society that Ukrainians continue to fight for freedom, democracy, and peace," she emphasized.
