The Ukrainian National Women’s League of America (UNWLA) is calling on the community to join a campaign promoting Ukrainian books in public libraries across the United States. This step is part of a broader strategy of cultural decolonization and restoring Ukraine’s voice in the global literary landscape.
This was report by UNWLA’s official platform.
“Ensuring the presence of Ukrainian books in American public libraries is more than cultural outreach. It is a deliberate act of decolonizing Ukraine’s intellectual heritage and restoring Ukrainian voices to their rightful place in the global literary space,” the organization said in its statement.
According to UNWLA, for decades Ukrainian literature has been marginalized or presented through imperial narratives that distorted Ukraine’s history, language, and cultural experience. In contrast, the presence of Ukrainian books in libraries allows international readers to perceive Ukraine as an independent nation with a rich literary tradition.
UNWLA emphasizes that American public libraries are vital gateways to knowledge, and Ukrainian books on their shelves introduce authentic voices to students, educators, and readers of diverse backgrounds, helping to overcome stereotypes and counter disinformation.
The organization also notes that it has already developed special toolkits for working with libraries, which have proven effective in increasing the presence of Ukrainian literature in U.S. library collections.
According to UNWLA, such efforts make Ukrainian stories accessible to a broader audience, strengthen community connections, promote inclusivity, and help libraries make a well-founded case for expanding their collections.
The organization pays special attention to practical guidance and has developed a set of tools and recommendations on how to join the movement:
- Establish contact with local libraries;
- Provide librarians with curated lists of Ukrainian books, including English-language editions;
- Organize cultural events—readings, presentations, and meetings with authors;
- Share information through social media, newsletters, and local media outlets.
“When libraries see interest in Ukrainian books, they are more likely to expand their collections,” the guidance for local chapters states.
To support the community, UNWLA offers consultations, informational materials, and assistance with advocacy efforts. The organization encourages Ukrainians to share successful examples of cooperation with libraries, submit their stories, and engage new libraries in adding Ukrainian titles.
