Peace in Question: Global Crises Distract Attention from Ukraine

Negotiations to end the war have come under the influence of broader international processes, particularly the conflict in the Middle East. European diplomats warn of declining U.S. attention to the Ukrainian track. At the same time, Ukraine is trying to intensify dialogue and is proposing new ideas for ending the war. Russia is using the situation to avoid concessions and maintain a position favorable to itself.

Zelenskyy Announces New Ideas for Ending the War

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky statedthat Ukraine sees prospects for a peaceful settlement of the war and is working on new approaches to bring it to an end. He emphasized that Kyiv and Washington share a common goal—achieving peace—and therefore remain allies on this issue. Zelenskyy stressed that Russia is trying to create a false impression that Ukraine is unwilling to negotiate, but, according to him, this is manipulation. He also highlighted the need to search daily for options for a peace agreement and to hold a separate meeting with the American side.

Zelenskyy also drew attention to air defense and technological partnership. He noted that Ukraine has an effective air defense system but needs anti-ballistic solutions that the United States can provide. Zelenskyy emphasized that combining American technologies with Ukraine’s experience in countering drones would make it possible to create effective protection against massive attacks. According to him, Ukraine is ready to exchange experience and technologies within allied cooperation. stated,

UWC Criticizes Easing of Sanctions Against Russia

The Ukrainian World Congress issued a strong statement regarding the easing of sanctions against Russia, emphasizing the negative consequences of such decisions. The organization noted that the relaxation of restrictions on Russian oil did not produce the expected economic effect for consumers, but instead brought Moscow about $10 billion in additional revenue. According to UWC estimates, these funds are directly used to finance the war against Ukraine. It is also emphasized that Russia continues to strengthen cooperation with authoritarian regimes.

The statement notes that Russia provides support to Iran, including intelligence that could be used for attacks on American forces.

“Every dollar allowed to flow into the Kremlin today turns into weapons tomorrow. Russia is not seeking peace. It is financing the war in Ukraine, destabilization in Europe, and now providing intelligence and weapons that have helped kill Americans and endanger U.S. allies. Easing sanctions does not bring stability. It brings even more aggression,” said UWC President Paul Grod.

The organization called for strengthening sanctions pressure as the only tool to deter aggression.

Trump Says Putin Fears the U.S., Not Europe

US President Donald Trump statedthat Russian leader Putin fears the United States and its armed forces. Speaking to journalists, he emphasized that the American military, built during his first presidential term, serves as a deterrent to Russia. At the same time, Trump criticized European allies for insufficient participation in international operations, particularly in ensuring maritime security. He also stated that the U.S. bears a disproportionate share of the security burden within NATO.

Trump also touched on the issue of support for Ukraine, emphasizing that the United States is not obligated to participate in this process. He noted that the previous administration actively cooperated with partners on Ukraine, but expressed doubts about the effectiveness of such approaches. The president also voiced dissatisfaction that allies do not reciprocate American initiatives. According to him, such a situation is unacceptable and requires revision.

Negotiations on Ukraine in a “Danger Zone,” FT Reports

Peace negotiations regarding Russia’s war against Ukraine are under threat due to shifting U.S. priorities. According to the The Financial Times, Washington’s attention has largely shifted to the Middle East, affecting the dynamics of the negotiation process. European diplomats believe this creates favorable conditions for Russia, particularly due to rising oil prices and possible delays in arms supplies to Ukraine. One EU representative described the situation as negotiations being in a “danger zone.”

There are also reports of competition for military resources between Ukraine and countries in the Middle East. In particular, this concerns air defense systems that may be redirected to other regions. European leaders are trying to persuade the United States to increase pressure on Russia, but according to sources, Washington is not showing readiness for new sanctions. At the same time, Russia is not demonstrating willingness to compromise, complicating prospects for further negotiations.

Kremlin Denies Reports of Failure of Peace Process

The Kremlin responded to reports of a possible failure of peace negotiations on Ukraine, stating that such assessments do not correspond to reality. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov statedthat Moscow disagrees with conclusions about declining U.S. interest in the negotiation process. According to him, Donald Trump’s statements indicate continued attention to the Ukrainian issue. He emphasized that the American president is allegedly actively calling for a deal.

At the same time, Peskov acknowledged that there are currently no concrete agreements on the next round of negotiations. According to him, the date and venue of new talks remain undefined. The Kremlin also stated its readiness to continue dialogue on ending the war. However, the Russian side did not specify under what conditions it is ready to negotiate.
