Disagreements and the search for solutions: The West between support for Ukraine and new crises

Recent events indicate that Western allies are facing increasingly difficult policy choices. On the one hand, the war in Ukraine continues, which requires sustained military and diplomatic support. On the other, the conflict with Iran is forcing the United States to reconsider priorities and resource allocation. This is generating discussions within the alliance and increasing tensions between partners about further steps.

Kallas and Rubio argue over pressure on Russia at the G7 summit

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaia Kallas, asked US Secretary of State Marco Rubio about increasing pressure on Russia during a meeting of G7 foreign ministers in France. According to sources, her remark irritated the American official and led to a sharp response.

“A year has passed, and there has been no progress on the Russian issue. When will you lose your patience?” – asked Callas.

In response, Rubio said: “We are doing everything we can to end the war. If you think you can do it better, please do. We will step aside.”

This exchange of remarks, according to sources, was a manifestation of growing distrust between the United States and some of its European allies regarding the approaches to the war in Ukraine. The American Secretary of State emphasizedthat Washington supports Ukraine with weapons, intelligence and other resources, while at the same time trying to engage in dialogue with both sides. After the argument, several European ministers intervened, emphasizing the importance of continuing US diplomatic efforts. Rubio later denied the fact of the conflict, stating:

“These meetings are often dedicated to thanking America for the role that we have played… and expressing gratitude for the mediating role that we have tried to play in this war between Russia and Ukraine. No one there is shouting, raising their voices or expressing anything negative.”

Finland demands not to divert weapons for Ukraine to war with Iran

Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkinen said, that European countries expect full implementation of contracts for the supply of weapons to Ukraine, even against the backdrop of the US war with Iran. He stressed that Helsinki will check whether all weapons paid for by Europeans actually reach the Ukrainian defense forces. According to him, in the event of problems with supplies, the allies will be forced to reconsider their approaches to cooperation.

“Each time we evaluate how the funds are spent and trust that the mechanism is working. If problems arise, then we must reconsider it,” he noted.

Concerns arose after reports of a possible redirection of American military equipment intended for Ukraine to the Middle East. This primarily concerns air defense systems, which are critical for protection against Russian missiles and drones. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte assured that key supplies are continuing, but risks remain. At the same time, Finland refuses to participate in military operations in the region, emphasizing its own security challenges due to its proximity to Russia.

Trump faces a difficult choice over war with Iran

US President Donald Trump, after a month of war with Iran, is faced with the need to make difficult decisions about further actions. According to analysts, he is faced with the choice between concluding a compromise agreement or further escalating the conflict with the risk of a protracted war. Despite diplomatic efforts, Iran continues attacks and partially blocks key energy supply routes. One expert stated

“President Trump has poor options to end the war.”

At the same time, the US administration is trying to combine pressure and negotiations, considering various scenarios – from large-scale strikes to the possible deployment of ground forces. Trump has stated his desire to avoid “eternal war,” but he continues to build up his military presence in the region. The situation is complicated by domestic political pressure, as the president’s approval rating has fallen amid rising energy prices. Uncertainty about the U.S. strategy is increasing tensions among allies and in global markets.

Ukraine Reaches Agreement with Middle Eastern Countries on Cooperation Against Drones

Ukraine is actively negotiating with Middle Eastern countries to conclude agreements on security and countering drones. Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga said, that the most advanced consultations are ongoing with the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

“We hope that during the visit to some countries these documents will be concluded and finalized,” he noted.

Ukraine is offering its partners its own experience in combating drones, gained during the war with Russia, in exchange for support and technological cooperation. According to the minister, the countries of the region have already spent hundreds of missiles to protect against attacks and are looking for more effective solutions. At the same time, Kyiv is trying not to lose international attention to the war in Ukraine against the backdrop of escalation in the Middle East. Ukrainian diplomacy is also considering the possibility of involving China in the peace process, hoping for its influence on Moscow.

Iranian opposition calls not to negotiate with the current government

Iranian opposition figure Reza Pahlavi spoke out against concluding an agreement with the current leadership of Iran, statingthat this would only postpone the threat. During his speech, he emphasized that the Iranian authorities are not a reliable partner in negotiations.

“The only thing that the remnants of this regime are capable of is to gain time, deceive and steal. They will never be honest or reliable partners for peace,” he said.

Pahlavi also called for new protests in the country and expressed his readiness to return to Iran to participate in political change. His speech took place against the backdrop of growing global tensions and discussions in the United States about the further strategy in the war with Iran. At the same time, US President Donald Trump, according to sources, is considering various options - from a deal to escalation. The position of the Iranian opposition adds another dimension to the complex diplomatic situation surrounding the conflict.
