A series of Ukrainian cultural events, festivals, and special presentations dedicated to the 20th anniversary of World Vyshyvanka Day will take place in San Francisco, the Bay Area, and the Sacramento region. Over the course of several weeks, festivals, cultural presentations, and meetings with guests from Ukraine will be held in San Francisco, the Bay Area, San Jose, Davis, and Santa Clara.

The events are organized by the Ukraine Support Foundation in cooperation with partners including the Consulate General of Ukraine in San Francisco, Code 038, the Ukrainian Heritage Club of Northern California, the Ukrainian Educational Center, and St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Catholic Church.

On May 16, Vyshyvanka Fest will take place in the Bay Area, California — an outdoor celebration featuring music, Ukrainian cuisine, children’s entertainment, and a concert program. Organizers note that this year’s celebration carries special significance due to the 20th anniversary of Vyshyvanka Day.
“Vyshyvanka Day is more than just a celebration of traditional clothing. It is a day when Ukrainians around the world wear the vyshyvanka as a symbol of unity, strength, and love for their culture,” organizers emphasize.
Festival guests can expect live music, a best vyshyvanka contest, Ukrainian dishes, and a family picnic format in the park. Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets and wear vyshyvankas. On May 21, Ukrainians are invited to join the celebration of World Vyshyvanka Day. In San Francisco, participants traditionally plan to gather near the Ferry Building. Organizers are calling on Ukrainians in the United States and around the world to wear vyshyvankas as a symbol of national identity and unity.
A separate part of the program will be the cultural event series “Embroidered Voices: From Ukraine to the World,” which will take place:
- May 29 — in San Francisco,
- May 31 — in San Jose,
- June 1 — in Davis,
- June 3 — in Santa Clara.
During the events, organizers will present the cultural projects “Occupied Heritage” and “Saved Heritage,” dedicated to recreating traditional clothing from temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories based on archival materials, museum exhibits, and private collections.
Guests of the events will include Lesia Voroniuk — founder of World Vyshyvanka Day, cultural curator, and head of the NGO “World Vyshyvanka Day,” as well as Nataliia Havdyda — director of the organization’s international cultural projects in the United States.
During the presentations, participants will be able to learn about the history of World Vyshyvanka Day, international cultural initiatives, the activities of the Vydyvo publishing house, and the significance of embroidery as a symbol of Ukrainian identity. Light snacks and beverages will also be provided for guests.
“Today, as Ukraine fights for its freedom and independence, the vyshyvanka has become a symbol of dignity, resilience, and national pride,” organizers of the events state.
