A social celebration of Vyshyvanka Day, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of World Vyshyvanka Day, took place at Ukraine House in Washington. The event combined a presentation of rescued vyshyvankas, a documentary film screening, Ukrainian dances, refreshments, and a memorial initiative honoring fallen defenders of Ukraine.

According to the organizers, during the event guests joined the global initiative “Embroidered Ribbon of Memory,” organized by World Vyshyvanka Day and the “Memorial of Heroes.” A special space was set up where everyone could tie an embroidered ribbon in memory of Ukrainian soldiers who died during the Russian invasion. Ukraine House emphasized that this part of the celebration became one of the most emotional moments of the evening.
The program also featured a presentation of rescued vyshyvankas from occupied territories, led by Nataliia Havdyda. Guests were also introduced to books by Lesia Voroniuk, the founder of the World Vyshyvanka Day tradition. Attendees had the opportunity to hear the stories behind embroidered shirts that survived occupation and became symbols of preserving Ukrainian identity even during wartime. Organizers stressed that today the vyshyvanka is not only an element of traditional clothing but also a symbol of resilience and national unity.
“Each tied ribbon was a silent promise: we will never forget,” Ukraine House noted.
According to the organizers, the evening also included a screening of the documentary by Suspilne Broadcasting and Suspilne Chernivtsi titled “Vyshyvanka Day: A Path to Oneself.” The film explores the meaning of the vyshyvanka for Ukrainians — from the stories of prisoners of war and polar explorers in Antarctica to children’s embroidered shirts and the garments in which Ukrainian heroes are laid to rest. Ukraine House noted that the film served as a profound reminder of the connection between culture, memory, and the struggle for freedom.
The event was hosted by Ruslan Falkov. The artistic program was enriched by a performance from the Tsvit Kalyny Ukrainian Dance Studio, which presented traditional Ukrainian dances. After the official program, guests continued socializing during a Ukrainian social evening organized in partnership with the restaurant RUTA.
Ukrainians of DC thanked all participants, volunteers, performers, and partners who helped make the event possible.
