Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has officially declared August 2026 Ukraine Month. The proclamation was issued to celebrate Ukraine’s Ukrainian heritage, Ukraine’s struggle for freedom, democracy, and sovereignty, and to honor the contributions of the Ukrainian-American community to the city’s development.
This was reported by Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, Illinois Division.
The document notes that Ukraine, which declared independence on August 24, 1991, has become a global symbol of freedom, resilience, and democracy. Despite full-scale Russian aggression, the Ukrainian people continue to courageously fight for their statehood, defending democratic values.
The proclamation also notes that Chicago is home to one of the largest Ukrainian communities in the United States. Ukrainian Americans have made significant contributions to the cultural, economic, educational, and civic life of the city, enriching it with their traditions, religious community activities, business development, and active civic engagement.
The document specifically addresses support for Ukrainians who were forced to leave their homeland due to war. The proclamation emphasizes that the city recognizes the strength, courage, and resilience of Ukrainian refugees who have found safety, support, and a welcoming community in Chicago.
“The City of Chicago recognizes and honors the strength, courage, and resilience of Ukrainian refugees who have found safety, support, and a welcoming community in our city. Therefore, I, Brandon Johnson, Mayor of Chicago, hereby declare August 2026 as Ukraine Month in Chicago and encourage all residents to join in celebrating the Ukrainian heritage and contributions of Ukrainian-Americans,” the proclamation states.
The document also notes the annual Ukrainian flag raising ceremony, which has become a symbol of solidarity between Chicago and Ukraine, as well as support for Ukrainian refugees who have found refuge in the city.
August 2026 has been officially declared Ukrainian Independence Month in the state of Illinois.
