New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has proclaimed August 24, 2026, Ukrainian Independence Day in the state. The decision was made at the initiative of the Passaic-Bergen Branch of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Ukraine’s independence.
This was reported by Ukrainian World Congress.
The proclamation emphasizes Ukraine’s sovereignty and the inviolability of its territorial integrity. The document also recognizes the courage of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Ukraine’s Defense Forces, which are resisting russian aggression and defending Ukraine, Europe, and their allies.
The proclamation separately highlights the Ukrainian people’s centuries-long aspiration for independence, as well as the preservation of Ukrainian culture, language, and national identity. The governor also underscored the longstanding ties between Ukraine and the United States.
The document notes that Ukraine has supported NATO operations for decades, sending its service members to serve alongside U.S. forces, including in Afghanistan and Iraq. It also recognizes the support provided by the United States and its allies to Ukrainian military personnel since 2014, particularly in the areas of military training and professional development.
The Ukrainian World Congress also announced the proclamation of August 24 as Ukrainian Independence Day. The organization noted that New Jersey is one of the most densely populated U.S. states and is home to one of the country’s largest Ukrainian American communities.
The UCCA thanked Governor Sherrill for the decision and emphasized its importance to the state’s Ukrainian community.
“We are extremely grateful to Governor Sherrill, who understands the importance of this day for the Ukrainian American community. At a time when the people of Ukraine continue to defend their independence at an extraordinary cost, this recognition is an important signal of solidarity and reminds our community that New Jersey continues to stand with Ukraine,” emphasized Mariyka Duplyak, president of the UCCA’s Passaic-Bergen Branch.
