Documentary about genocide in Ukraine to be shown in the United States

In January 2025, the U.S. states of Minnesota and North Dakota will host the premiere of the documentary about the genocide in Ukraine, Holodomor: Minnesota Memories of Genocide in Ukraine" ("Holodomor: Minnesota Memories of Genocide in Ukraine").

This was reported by Twin Cities Public Television.

The 30-minute film, which will air on Twin Cities Public Television (TPT), is the result of a four-year collaboration between the Ukrainian Orthodox and Greek Catholic communities in Minneapolis and St. Paul. The project involved representatives from St. Michael's, St. George's, St. Catherine's Ukrainian Orthodox Churches and St. Constantine's Ukrainian Catholic Church.

The film explores how memories of the Holodomor of 1932-1933, which claimed millions of lives, are preserved and passed down through generations in Ukrainian-American families and communities.

"I wanted to make the story of the Holodomor personal and relatable to American audiences," said the film's screenwriter and director, Zina Poletz Gutmanis, for whom this project was her debut.

The film also draws parallels between the tragedy of 1932-1933 and Russia's current war against Ukraine. Ukrainian soldiers undergoing rehabilitation at a Minnesota medical center participated in the film.

Another key message of the film is the role of the Ukrainian diaspora in preserving the memory of the Holodomor and supporting Ukraine both then and now.

The documentary will premiere on January 5, 2025 at 20:00 local time on TPT MN (2-2). In total, more than 75 Ukrainian-Americans participated in the making of the film.
