Deadline has published a list of the ten best documentaries of 2024. Among the selected works is the Ukrainian-American film The Porcelain War, directed by Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontiev.
This was reported by Deadline.
The movie tells the story of three artists from Kharkiv - Slava Leontiev, his wife Anya Stasenko and their friend Andriy Stefanov. Despite the danger of full-scale war, they stay on the front line in Kharkiv and decorate destroyed buildings with porcelain figurines.
The author of the list, film critic Matthew Carey, called The Porcelain War an "artistic triumph". He particularly praised Andriy Stefanov's cinematography, the animation that brings the porcelain projects to life, and the music by Ukrainian band DakhaBrakha that complements the film's atmosphere.
"The movie shows what forms resistance can take: during the day, Leontiev trains the Ukrainian military, and in his free time, he and his wife create artistic figurines. Their work - owls, dragons and other characters - decorate a city at war," Carey writes.
"The Porcelain War" has already been shortlisted for the 97th Academy Awards, confirming its high artistic value.
Other films on the list include The Black Box Diaries, Dahomey, Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat and others.
