Restoration of One of Chicago's Most Beautiful Ukrainian Cathedrals Nears Completion

An extensive restoration of the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of St. Nicholas, recognized as the fifth most beautiful architectural landmark in Chicago, is underway at the corner of Rice and Oakley Streets. Built in 1915 and modeled after the legendary St. Sophia of Kyiv, the cathedral has 13 domes symbolizing Jesus Christ and the twelve apostles. The facade is currently being renovated as part of a multi-million dollar restoration project.

This was reported on Facebook with reference to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral.

The work, which has been going on for five years, has yielded significant results: 12 of the 13 domes were fully restored. The main dome, dedicated to Jesus Christ, remains the last stage. Its restoration is now at the stage of preparing the scaffolding.

"This is a truly unique process because all the domes were made of new copper, which is much stronger than the original. The old material was so worn that it was paper-thin after 114 years of service. The new domes have been recreated down to the smallest detail according to the historical models," explain the organizers of the restoration.

The copper on the domes, which is still shiny, will be given a green patina that will harmoniously restore the cathedral's original appearance. Special attention was also paid to the decorative elements, including the arches, which are now made of more durable materials.

The project has been made possible by the financial support of the community and patrons. Approximately $5 million has been raised for the restoration, including a $25,000 grant from the City of Chicago. However, additional funds are needed to complete the work.

"If there were a benefactor with a few million in his pocket, it would speed up the work considerably. But we are realists and continue to work thanks to donations from Ukrainians, Americans and local residents. This project is a true manifestation of God's grace and the unity of the community," the representatives of the Cathedral emphasize.

St. Nicholas Cathedral is a symbol of the faith, history and culture of Ukrainians in Chicago. The restoration not only restores its grandeur, but also reminds us of the importance of teamwork and sacrifice in preserving heritage.
