The parking lot of Santa Anita Park racetrack was transformed into a donation center for those affected by the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles and surrounding areas in California. Thousands of volunteers joined together to collect and distribute essential items such as baby formula, hygiene products, water and pet supplies to families who lost their homes and property. The Ukrainian-American community also joined the volunteer community, preparing and distributing more than a thousand servings of borscht to evacuees and rescuers as a sign of gratitude for the support Ukraine receives from the United States.
Mira Rubin, a volunteer and founder of the Shield of Freedom Foundation, told Vilni media.
"During all these days, when entire neighborhoods of Los Angeles were destroyed by fire, the Ukrainian community organized to help the victims. Hundreds of Ukrainians got involved. Some organized collections, others cooked meals. Many helped clean and dismantle the damaged buildings. This is the least we can do to thank Americans for their support of Ukraine," said Mira Rubin.
She also noted that there are Ukrainians among those who have lost their homes.
"In just one day, we cooked and distributed more than 1,600 servings of borscht, 600 chebureks, and the number of dumplings is impossible to count," the volunteer said.
The event attracted local news coverage and underscored the strength of ties between the Ukrainian and American communities. In a show of solidarity, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also expressed his support by offering to send 150 Ukrainian firefighters to help fight the California wildfires.
Organizers note that the event not only helped the victims, but also attracted new supporters of Ukraine.
"It was an incredible and inspiring day for the entire Ukrainian-American community in Southern California. Thank you to everyone who participated and to those who supported us," said the participants.
The unwavering support of Ukrainians was also featured in a story by one of the local television stations. KTLA 5 reported, that Ukrainian volunteers worked tirelessly for 24 hours to prepare traditional Ukrainian dishes for the victims.
"Ukrainian-Americans have long wanted to give back for the incredible support the United States has given to Ukraine over the past three years. So when the opportunity arose, Ukrainians did what they do best - they mobilized," said a representative of the Ukrainian communities in Los Angeles and San Diego.
