A team of Ukrainian wounded defenders took part in the international marathon Cateran Yomp 2026 in Scotland, where sport became not only a test of strength, but also part of the process of veterans' recovery after the war.

Thus, on June 6-7, nine Ukrainian veterans joined the Cateran Yomp 2026 – one of the most difficult endurance tests in the world. Participants from different countries covered routes through the Scottish Highlands up to 54 miles (87 kilometers) in less than 24 hours.
The official sponsor of the Ukrainian team's participation was the American charity organization United Help Ukraine, which provided the veterans with the opportunity to represent Ukraine at the international event.
Team Ukraine was led by Major General Volodymyr Gavrylov, a retired Ukrainian Armed Forces deputy defense minister and former defense attaché in Washington, who was awarded the American Legion of Merit.
The participation of Ukrainian defenders was part of the Wounded Warrior program, which is implemented by United Help Ukraine. The initiative is aimed at supporting wounded soldiers through treatment, prosthetics, rehabilitation, and long-term recovery. The organization has already helped Ukrainian veterans participate in international sports events, including Warrior Yomp 2025 in Washington.
According to Volodymyr Gavrylov, participation in such competitions helps veterans recover physically and psychologically, and also demonstrates to international partners the strength of the Ukrainian spirit and the indomitability of Ukrainian defenders.
“For us, the priority is helping our wounded defenders recover physically and mentally through sports,” said Volodymyr Havrylov. “At the same time, we want to continue demonstrating to our partners and supporters that Ukraine stands strong, continues to fight, and remains determined to win. Our message is simple: it is important to stand against any aggressor seeking to take away your land, freedom, and independence.”
United Help Ukraine President Maryna Baydyuk emphasized that Cateran Yomp has become a symbolic platform for Ukrainian veterans who were able to show their endurance, willpower and determination in front of an international audience.
“We are proud to support Ukrainian defenders beyond U.S.-based sporting events and help them take part in challenges across Europe,” said Maryna Baydyuk. “Symbolizing endurance and strength, Yomp is the perfect stage for Ukraine’s defenders to showcase not only their resilience and determination, but also the enduring spirit of Ukraine itself.”
United Help Ukraine notes that the participation of Ukrainian veterans in international sports events not only contributes to rehabilitation, but also helps draw the world's attention to the consequences of the Russian war against Ukraine and support for those who defended the independence of the state.
