The issue of the suspension of key assistance programs to Ukraine, including the investigation of war crimes committed by Russia, was raised during Ukrainian Week events in Washington. Freezing funding could deprive Ukraine of the ability to hold Russia accountable for its crimes. In addition, the list includes programs that have allowed Ukraine to restore its energy infrastructure, increasing the potential risk of mass blackouts due to damage to power grids.
This was said by Democratic Congressman (7th District of Virginia) of Ukrainian descent Eugene Windman during the Ukrainian Week in Washington events.
"Some of the aid programs frozen (by the Trump administration - ed.) are programs that help bring Russia to justice for its war crimes," Windman said.
According to him, the termination of funding affected not only war crimes investigations, but also the involvement of international experts in this work.
According to the congressman, programs to restore Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which is regularly attacked by Russia, have also been suspended.
"Rebuilding Ukraine's infrastructure and power grids, which are under constant daily attack from the Russians, are also among the programs that have been suspended."
Windman then called on the U.S. government to lift these restrictions.
"We need to restore these programs as soon as possible. If the president wants peace in Ukraine, he needs to put pressure on Russia, not just Ukraine," the U.S. congressman stressed.
