Recognition in the US Congress: UCCA Leader Maria Dmytriv-Kapeniak Receives Commendation for Support of Ukraine

As part of Women's History Month, Congresswoman Delia Ramirez, representing Illinois' 3rd District, noted the significant contributions of Ukrainians in Illinois and thanked Dr. Maria Dmytriv-Kapeniak for her tireless work on behalf of humanity.

Dr Dmytryv-Kapeniak is a general practitioner, an active member of the Ukrainian Medical Association of North America (UMANA), and President of the Illinois Chapter of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA IL). 

"She coordinates medical donations and supplies that help save lives in Ukraine. This Sunday, I was honoured to stand with her and Ukrainian Americans at a rally in Chicago to send a clear message: We who stand for democracy will not be intimidated by dictators - not in Ukraine, not in other parts of the world, not in the United States," said Congresswoman Delia Ramirez in her speech.

On behalf of the 3rd District of Illinois, home to thousands of Ukrainians and Ukrainian Americans, Congresswoman Delia Ramirez recognized Dr. Dmytryk-Kapeniak for her extraordinary leadership and commitment to human dignity, peace and democracy.

The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (Illinois) also expressed its pride in its President, noting that this recognition is not only an honor for Dr. Maria, but also a recognition of UCCA IL's 50-year history of supporting Ukraine and its people.

Background The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) is the leading organisation of the Ukrainian community in the United States, representing the interests of Ukrainian Americans and promoting support for Ukraine at the national and international levels.

Founded in 1940, the UCCA is involved in

  • Advocacy with the U.S. government in support of Ukraine
  • Humanitarian aid and fundraising for Ukrainians
  • Preservation of Ukrainian culture and heritage in the United States
  • Organizing events and demonstrations in support of Ukraine

The organization has chapters throughout the United States and works with the government, diplomats, and community organizations to protect the interests of Ukraine and the Ukrainian community.

Maria Dmytriv-Kapeniak is a family physician with over 27 years of досвідом, practicing in Chicago, Illinois. She received her medical degree from the Ternopil State Medical University in Ukraine in 1998. After moving to the United States, Maria completed her residency at St. Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center. She is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Dr Dmytriv-Kapeniak's professional experience includes working in a variety of health care settings, including the academic environment of the University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Medicine and remote and underserved areas in the United States and abroad. She has a special interest in women's health and dermatology. In addition to her clinical practice, she is actively involved in community service.
