Sandy Discovers Ukraine: An Evening of Culture and Sisterhood with the Heroic City of Bucha

In Sandy, Utah, a ceremonial event was held to commemorate the signing of a sister city agreement with the Ukrainian city of Bucha. The celebration filled the city hall with guests, including local residents, members of the Ukrainian community, and performing arts groups.

The event, held at Sandy City Hall, brought together a full house of attendees—city residents, representatives of the Ukrainian community, artists, and officials. The initiative for the partnership came from Mayor Monica Zoltanski, who expressed deep respect for the Ukrainian people, especially the residents of Bucha.

It is a commitment to provide real support as Bucha recovers from immense grief and loss, while remaining a beacon of peace, renewal, and the fight for independence. Sandy will actively seek ways to assist Bucha — through humanitarian aid, educational exchanges, recovery resources, and municipal collaboration. We look forward to visits in both directions — between our elected representatives and the people of Bucha. We fight for the people of democratic nations, and we pledge to stand with Bucha not just in words, but in action,” Mayor Monica Zoltanski stated in her speech.

According to the mayor, during the evening event, guests enjoyed traditional Ukrainian cuisine, learned more about Ukraine’s history and culture, and were treated to performances by the Otava Ensemble, Character Dance Ensemble, and the Utah Ukrainian Association, who showcased authentic Ukrainian singing and folk dance. She noted that Sandy and Bucha have much in common: both cities are located near their respective capitals and are home to kind, resilient, and determined people.

"This is the beginning of a new friendship with Bucha, which is rebuilding today after brutal attacks. We are global citizens. Let’s work together to support one another," said Monica Zoltanski.

During the event, attendees recorded a video greeting to Ukraine, expressing support for Bucha, Ukraine, and Ukrainians in general:

“We are incredibly grateful to be a sister city to Bucha!”
“We warmly greet you, wish you all the best, and hope everything goes well for you!”
“We are excited to be your sister city and look forward to doing even more in the future to show our friendship!”
