Melodies of Sophisticated Styles: An Evening of Beauty, Culture, and Support for Ukraine in Wyckoff

A charity evening of culture, music, and Ukrainian fashion, Melodies of Sophisticated Styles, took place in Wyckoff, New Jersey, this past weekend. The event was organized by Branch 135 of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America (UNWLA) in collaboration with the designer brand Zerno and young Ukrainian composer and performer Valeriia Vovk. Blending music and original Ukrainian fashion design, the event raised over $10,000 in support of Ukrainian defenders.

This was reported by the event organizers.

In her welcoming remarks, UNWLA President Natalia Pavlenko emphasized the organization’s nationwide reach and its work in education, culture, advocacy, and social support. She noted that its century-long history is a testament to the strength of women’s unity and determined effort.

“This is the oldest and largest Ukrainian women’s organization in America. And I can confidently say that we are likely the most impactful grassroots Ukrainian organization in the U.S. That’s one reason so many women join us: together we can make a difference and have a greater impact than we ever could alone… Culture is what brings us together tonight. When our members hold pysanka workshops or share stories about embroidery, songs, or dances — this isn’t just tradition. It’s an act of resistance. Every time we share a part of our culture, we declare: we are Ukrainians. We have our language, our history, and our identity. I thank each of you for being here tonight and supporting this mission,” said Pavlenko.

The central theme of the evening was clothing as a bearer of Ukrainian identity. Kristina Patyk, founder of the ethno-brand Zerno, presented a new collection inspired by the elegance of Ukrainian women from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. Her designs combine traditional motifs with modern tailoring, using natural materials such as hemp, cotton, silk, and wool.

Patyk also spoke about the richness of Ukrainian culture and the heritage of both historic and modern Ukrainian women.

Adding to the unique atmosphere of the event was Valeriia Vovk, a singer, composer, and producer whose music, as guests noted, “envelops, moves, and inspires.” Accompanied by the talented guitarist Michel, each of her performances was a deeply emotional journey. Her set became the emotional heart of the evening, blending contemporary Ukrainian soulfulness with classical elegance. The event was filmed by Emil Brandafi.

Beyond its cultural significance, the evening carried a deeply charitable purpose — raising funds for a rehabilitation center in Kharkiv that helps wounded Ukrainian defenders recover. Thanks to the generosity of attendees, UNWLA members, and community partners, over $10,000 was raised.

“Our evening Melodies of Sophisticated Styles was truly magical — charity, beauty, and music united us in a shared spirit of goodwill! Thank you to everyone who joined us and supported Branch 135 of the UNWLA. Together we raised over $10,000 for Ukrainian defenders. Special thanks to Kristina Patyk, founder of Zerno, who not only gave us an unforgettable aesthetic experience but also donated 10% of her sales to this important cause,” remarked co-organizer Natalia Brandafi.
