Near the Russian Embassy in the U.S. capital, Ukrainian activists and American supporters of Ukraine planted dozens of sunflowers in a "Victory Garden" to symbolize resilience and resistance to Russian aggression. The sunflower planting event was organized by the US Ukrainian Activists (USUA) organization for the fourth consecutive year.
This was reported by Nadia Shaporinska, President of US Ukrainian Activists.
"The sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine and a powerful symbol of our struggle for freedom, independence, and victory. Despite Russia's repeated genocidal attempts to wipe out Ukraine, Ukrainians will never stop defending their right to life and freedom. Ukraine will fight for its freedom and independence until every inch of its territory is liberated. Ukraine will win!" — said USUA President Nadiya Shaporinska.
The event brought together volunteers, diplomats, and Ukrainian and American activists, who planted new rows of sunflowers together as a reminder that Ukraine's fight for freedom continues.
The Sunflower Planting Initiative was launched in April 2022, two months after the outbreak of full-scale war. It was started by American human rights activist Benjamin Wittes. Since then, it has become an annual tradition. This year, activist Connor O'Brien joined the organization and is responsible for the daily care of the flower bed.
The planting took place in front of the Russian Embassy on land named in honor of Boris Nemtsov, a Russian opposition leader who was killed in 2015. The activists noted that previous gardens had been vandalized many times, so they will install a video surveillance system this year to protect the space.
"I believe that this is an unjust war. The Ukrainian people have the right to defend themselves and their homeland," said Lindsey McGrath, a volunteer at the event.
The organizers expressed their sincere gratitude to all the Ukraine supporters and Embassy of Ukraine representatives in the United States who joined this year's event. They called on these individuals to join next year's event and reminded them that small actions are powerful when backed by truth.
