The launch event brought together representatives of the academic community, diplomats, and public figures, including former U.S. Secretary of State Melania Verveer; Joel Gellman, dean of the Walsh School of Foreign Service; and representatives of the Clinton family. The opening ceremony was attended by Olena Zelenska, the First Lady of Ukraine, who emphasized in her address that Ukrainian studies programs play an important role in deepening knowledge about Ukraine and strengthening the principles of justice and truth worldwide.
"When we know the truth and have information, we increase the balance of truth in the world. We do not allow ourselves to be manipulated. We become stronger, as does our country," she said.
According to the coalition's coordinators, they have received more than 70 applications from universities and research institutions in Finland, South Africa, and other countries that wish to join the program. Next year, a competition will be announced for a professor of Ukrainian Studies. Candidates will be offered the opportunity to teach the course "Ukraine in the Modern World," conduct seminars on political culture, and create joint research projects with partners in the United States and Europe.
For reference:
The Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies was founded in 2024 to unite the world's leading universities in studying Ukraine and its international importance. The coalition already includes institutions from more than ten countries, and memoranda of cooperation have been signed in Helsinki and Cape Town. Through this network, new educational programs, academic exchanges, and publications are planned to help the Ukrainian diaspora in the United States and abroad preserve and disseminate accurate information about Ukraine.
