A day of light and unity: children receive Holy Communion for the first time in two Ukrainian parishes in Illinois

Parish communities of Ukrainian Greek Catholic churches in the United States witnessed profound spiritual events. St. Joseph's Church in Chicago and the Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church in Palatine celebrated the first conscious reception of Holy Communion.

This was reported by the St. Joseph the Betrothed Ukrainian Catholic Church and by Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church-Palatine.

According to the faithful, St. Joseph's parish celebrated this day as a real celebration of spiritual unity. Dressed in white clothes and wearing wreaths, the children received Christ in the Holy Eucharist for the first time with sincere prayer. It is not just a parish celebration—it is a deeply personal moment for each child, their family, the catechists, and the entire community.

Throughout the year, the children attended catechetical classes, learning prayers, the Gospel, the basics of faith, and the lives of the saints. The priests and their assistants lovingly and responsibly passed on not only knowledge, but also the experience of faith in God to them. In his closing remarks, Father Mykola Buryadnyk emphasized:

"This day is not only a holiday for children. It is a holiday for the entire Church because when a child opens their heart to Christ, the entire community is renewed."

The testimonies of those who had experienced this moment a few years ago were especially touching.

"I realized that the Eucharist is not just a ritual, but Christ himself coming to me. Every time, it feels like the first time," said Sofia Budyadnyk, a young parishioner.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Palataini hosted another solemn and grace-filled event: the First Holy Communion for the children of the local parish. In an atmosphere of unity and prayer, the young believers received Jesus in the Holy Eucharist for the first time.

Pastors Fathers Mykhailo Kuzma, Yaroslav Mendiuk, and Andriy Kuzniak led the preparation, along with catechists Olga Mendiuk, Natalia Kuzniak, and Ivanna Zaika. During the 2024–25 school year, the pastors and catechists guided the children on a journey of Christian education, from their first prayers to a deeper understanding of religious principles.

The parish expressed gratitude to all who participated in this spiritual journey, including parents, godparents, families, and the community. After all, educating children in the faith requires unity, prayer, and setting an example of a Christian life.
