In Southfield, Michigan, a sunny August day became a special occasion for the parishioners and friends of St. Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral of the UOC of the USA, who gathered at the Ukrainian retreat Dibrova to celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord and take part in the cathedral’s annual parish picnic. Prayer, Ukrainian traditions, delicious food, and family-friendly activities made for a truly joyful summer celebration.

The annual Pokrova Cathedral picnic began with a prayer service led by Father Pavlo, followed by the blessing of fruit baskets – a long-standing tradition that is an integral part of this feast day.
The event brought together many parishioners and friends of Dibrova. Guests enjoyed Ukrainian cuisine, beverages, and desserts lovingly prepared by volunteers under the leadership of Wara Sirij and Kateryna Foroshivska.
Children had fun with a petting zoo, fishing, and swimming, while adults enjoyed volleyball and peaceful walks through the picturesque park.
“Our volunteers dedicated a lot of time and effort to make everything beautifully organized,” noted the organizers, extending their thanks to Nick & Debbie Oleksienko, Andrij & Sonia Smyk, Jordan Fylonenko for their active assistance.
Special gratitude was also expressed to credit unions for their financial support, which helps make the event a success year after year.
“It was a warm day filled with spirituality and Ukrainian traditions. We witnessed the blessing of baskets, a Divine Liturgy, and enjoyed delicious food and heartfelt fellowship. We’re grateful for the warm welcome and happy to have had the opportunity to connect with the community,” shared Michigan Federal Credit Union.
