UCU opens new bachelor's program in physical therapy with the possibility of internship in the USA

The Ukrainian Catholic University is opening a new bachelor's program in physical therapy, adapted to the modern needs of the Ukrainian healthcare system and the challenges of war. The university notes that the training will be student-centered, with practical training, work in small groups and support from teachers.

This was report by Ukrainian Catholic University.

As reported, until now UCU has been preparing masters in the field of occupational therapy and physical therapy, and from 2026 the university will offer a full cycle of education - bachelor's and master's degrees. The head of the new bachelor's program is Andriy Hertsyk, professor of the Department of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy at UCU.

“We want to lay a good foundation for the continued professional career of each of our graduates, so we have developed a bachelor's program that is built around the student,” says Andriy Hertsyk.

It was also noted that the bachelor's program will last 3 years and 10 months. It is based on a student-centered approach, which should help reveal the strengths of the student during his studies and provide support in professional growth both during the educational process and after its completion.

“The war has greatly changed the context of our lives and has affected the healthcare industry. We understand what needs there are in Ukraine and in those areas for which we train future specialists. UCU specialists study and implement this experience into educational programs and ensure that the educational process meets the challenges of the time. It is important for us that students also understand these challenges in the process of identifying themselves with their future professional role,” emphasizes Svitlana Kohut, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences of UCU.

According to Svitlana Kohut, the opening of the new program is part of the UCU Strategy 2030, in particular the strategic project “Recovery: Physical, Psychosocial, Spiritual Rehabilitation”. Students will study in modern university buildings, as well as undergo clinical practice at the UCU Medical Clinic and in various medical and rehabilitation institutions in Lviv.

It is separately noted that UCU cooperates with partner universities in Europe and America. Students will have the opportunity to study under the COIL system and undergo internships abroad under the Erasmus+ programs, gaining international experience while still studying.

“We see UCU bachelor’s graduates as value-formed individuals and professionals who are ready for independent practice from the moment they receive their diploma,” Andriy Hertsyk emphasized.

As it is specified, the university also emphasizes not only professional training, but also the value growth of students. Education at UCU is based on Christian principles of dignity, respect, and service to the public good, and young people are involved in socially oriented projects and volunteerism.

“The philosophy of the specialty of physical therapist goes far beyond the physiotherapy procedure. It is about the health and activity of a person throughout life. We have a well-established ecosystem for training physical therapy specialists, and we care about the quality and relevance of our educational services,” Svitlana Kohut summarized.
