September is the start of a new year in CYM branches. And this year, the Ukrainian community also celebrated the anniversary of the Union. For over a century, the organization has been uniting young people around the idea of an independent Ukraine and preserving national identity.

In particular, on the air, Deputy Bulavna, Odessa Department Iryna Ostafiychuk, and Chief Educator, Mariupol Department Taras Mytrofanyuk of the Pavlushkov branch of the Ukrainian Youth Union in Chicago spoke about how the diaspora preserves Ukrainian identity and helps the front.
According to representatives of the organization, the Mykola Pavlushkov CYM branch in Chicago is one of the most active in the diaspora. Every Saturday, “steps” are held here – meetings for children and youth, during which participants study the history of Ukraine, religion, language, acquire educational skills and form leadership qualities.
“We gather, we learn about Ukraine, about its history, about modernity. We fight for freedom and independence, even while in the diaspora,” said Taras Mytrofanyuk.
The Union of Ukrainian Youth was founded in 1925 in Ukraine, and after World War II it resumed its activities in the diaspora. The organization has been operating in the USA since 1949. Today, there are two departments in Chicago – “Mariupol” and “Odesa”, where steps for children and youth are held every Saturday.
A special place is occupied by summer and winter camps, reunions, cultural events and religious education.
“Being a member of the Union is not just about attending classes. It is a lifestyle. We support Ukraine, we participate in protests, in the information struggle, we involve young people in civic activism,” said Taras Mytrofanyuk.
In particular, as part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the organization in the United States, camps, educational events, as well as celebrations with the participation of Ukrainian military personnel who were temporarily released from the front to participate in the celebration were held. The anniversary celebrations brought together representatives of the CYM from different countries of the world. After the celebrations, the organizers transferred more than 200 tents, sleeping bags and other items to Ukraine for the needs of the military.
It was also noted that the CYM operates in many countries of the world.
“When we say CYM, it is a global organization. Not only the USA, but also Australia, Canada, Europe. Ukrainians do not forget their roots and continue to support the struggle,” said Ostafiychuk. “Our goal, like 100 years ago, remains unchanged: God and Ukraine. We are growing, we are attracting new members. And we are fighting – as then, so now.”
