The war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine has once again entered a phase of intense confrontation. Russia is trying to seize the initiative both on the front and in negotiations. Ukraine, for its part, is not only waging hostilities, but is also trying to demonstrate a reformist domestic policy, dismissing ministers for a large-scale corruption scheme in the energy sector.
Ukraine: Patriot Request and New Challenges
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced his intention to purchase 27 Patriot batteries from the United States to strengthen the protection of the energy system from Russian attacks. This is a record request, which indicates the scale of the threats with which Ukraine enters the winter. However, there is currently no official confirmation from Washington of its readiness to satisfy this request.
At the same time, the situation on the front is becoming more complicated. Russian forces are trying to advance in the Zaporizhia region and take control of the city of Pokrovsk. The General Staff of Ukraine denied the complete encirclement of the city, but confirmed critical logistical difficulties.
In particular, the enemy, маючи an advantage in people and equipment, advanced in several directions and captured three settlements. According to the official statement of the Ukrainian military command, Ukrainian units hold the front line, but were forced to move to less vulnerable positions.
In addition, Ukrainian units were forced to withdraw troops to more advantageous lines in conditions of intense fire on the southeastern Zaporizhia Front, but the enemy's advance was stopped. Currently, the front in southeastern Ukraine remains one of the hottest, and international support is vitally needed.
A corruption scandal in the energy sector continues in Kyiv
At the same time, a corruption scandal in the energy sector erupted in Ukraine, forcing President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky to dismiss the Minister of Justice and the Minister of Energy. At the same time, he called for the imposition of personal sanctions against his old business partner.
This is an investigation by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP) into the embezzlement of $100 million during a large-scale corruption scheme to influence the activities of strategic state-owned enterprises Energoatom.
"There must be maximum integrity in the energy sector, absolutely in all processes. I support every investigation conducted by law enforcement officers and anti-corruption agencies. This is an absolutely clear and consistent position for everyone," Zelensky emphasized in his address.
The wealth and publicity of the case have added pressure on the Ukrainian authorities from the public and international partners. In addition to domestic significance, this also has foreign policy consequences - Ukraine's reputation as a recipient of aid from the United States and the world has suffered.
Russia: Peace proposals and progress in the south

The regime itself admits that the talks are not making progress, while attacks on residential buildings and infrastructure in Ukrainian cities continue. The Russians have increasingly been announcing “peace initiatives,” trying to create the illusion of constructiveness amid the escalation.
“Peace will come when we achieve all our strategic goals,” Peskov said.
US: Support for Ukraine is verbal, but not resource-based
The G7 leaders gathered in Canada for a two-day meeting, during which the situation in Ukraine was one of the main items on the agenda. During the meeting of foreign ministers, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmedthat the United States remains on Ukraine's side.
However, no new military assistance programs were announced. The US intended to discuss with partners ways of a peaceful settlement, but also issues of arms supply and geopolitical influence. Ukraine continues to make requests for military support, while Trump sometimes hints that Kyiv must make concessions to end the conflict.
“The United States remains steadfast in working with our partners to encourage Russia to engage in diplomatic efforts and direct dialogue with Ukraine to achieve a lasting and lasting peace,” the Secretary of State wrote on the social network X.
European countries at the G7 meeting confirmed their readiness to support Ukraine’s energy sustainability, in particular through the supply of equipment for electricity generation. The creation of a new fund to support critical infrastructure is being discussed.
At the same time, there is a growing awareness at the EU level that the war in Ukraine is part of a broader security architecture. Consultations are ongoing in Brussels on the formation of new instruments to deter the Russian Federation, but without quick results.
