American historian Timothy Snyder has warned that promoting the so-called “Russian deal” on Ukraine, which is reportedly being discussed in the White House, increases the risks of nuclear war. According to him, such a deal undermines the international order and makes a just recovery of Ukraine impossible.
This was stated by American historian Timothy Snyder.
“First – it significantly increases the likelihood of nuclear war. If Ukraine is forced to accept terms of capitulation, the rest of the world will conclude that to deter Russia or China they need their own nuclear arsenals. Forcing capitulation means nuclear proliferation. Nuclear proliferation means an increased risk of nuclear war globally,” Snyder said.
He explained that any attempt to impose terms of defeat on Ukraine creates a precedent for global arms races and increases the danger of a large-scale conflict involving nuclear weapons.
Snyder named the destruction of the international order as the second risk: “The foundation of our international order is states with inviolable borders. By rewarding Russia for invasion, you create a world where wars and occupations become normal.” The historian warns that such an approach legitimizes aggression and makes the violent redrawing of borders an acceptable practice in international relations.
The third point, according to Snyder, concerns regional peace: “If Russia is rewarded for invasion, and the conditions of the deal leave it stronger, this encourages Moscow to continue wars in Europe legally, morally, psychologically, and economically.”
The fourth issue, he said, is future recovery: “Peace is not just a temporary absence of fighting. Ukraine needs to be able to defend itself, be sovereign, participate in international institutions, and rebuild its economy. None of this exists in the proposed settlement.”
The fifth and key aspect Snyder highlights is the process itself: “Ukrainians, who are the most important stakeholders, were not consulted. This is a Russia-oriented settlement, translated into English by Americans.”
Snyder emphasized that without the participation of Ukraine and its allies, any “peace settlement” would only imitate peace and would not provide stability.
In his address “The Putin-Witkoff Plan Worsens the War,” the historian summarized these five reasons why, in his view, the United States should not assist russia in subjugating Ukraine, and called on policymakers to prevent a scenario that would make the world “more dangerous than at any time since the Second World War.”
