The focus of U.S. policy is shifting, directly affecting the pace of negotiations on ending the war in Ukraine. At the same time, signals from Washington point to internal contradictions — from statements of support to doubts about the necessity of involvement. Ukraine is trying to keep its partners’ attention and is proposing new formats for dialogue. Against this backdrop, Russia is using the situation to delay the process and increase pressure.
Putin and Zelensky Announce Different Ceasefire Formats
Russia announced a two-day ceasefire on May 8–9 to mark the anniversary of the end of World War II, while Ukraine put forward an alternative initiative. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky proposed starting a ceasefire earlier — on the night of May 6 — emphasizing the priority of protecting human lives. At the same time, the Ukrainian side remains skeptical of short-term ceasefires, considering them insufficient for a real cessation of hostilities. In Moscow, officials stated they expect a mirror response from Kyiv. Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Defense warned of a large-scale response if Ukraine attempts attacks during the celebrations.
The Kremlin also emphasized security measures for the parade, which this year will take place without the traditional display of military equipment. Ukraine, for its part, stresses readiness to act symmetrically but insists on longer-term agreements. Previous experiences with short ceasefires, including during Easter, were accompanied by mutual accusations of violations.
Ukraine Increases Drone Strikes on Russian Targets
Ukrainian forces are actively increasing the number of medium-range drone strikes on Russian military positions. According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, the intensity of such attacks has significantly risen in recent months, with strikes at distances over 20 km doubling compared to March. This approach allows targeting logistics hubs, ammunition depots, and command centers of the enemy.
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported that more than 160 such strikes were carried out in April alone, at distances of up to 150 km. These attacks aim to deplete enemy resources and reduce the intensity of shelling. Additionally, Ukrainian forces are destroying air defense systems and electronic warfare equipment, opening opportunities for deeper strikes. Ukraine is also continuing to develop its defense industry and drone technologies.
Trump Suggests War with Iran Could Continue for Weeks
US President Donald Trump saidthat the conflict with Iran could last another two to three weeks. He did not confirm whether the ceasefire had been violated after shelling in the UAE and refrained from providing a clear assessment of the situation.
“Well, I can’t tell you that,” he said in response to journalists’ questions. At the same time, Trump expressed confidence in a U.S. victory regardless of how events unfold.
He also stated that the United States controls the Strait of Hormuz and has a significant military advantage. “Either we make the right deal, or we win very easily. From a military standpoint, we’ve already won,” he said.
Trump added that he is not limiting himself to a specific timeframe in this conflict and suggested that oil prices may continue to rise due to developments in the Middle East.
Ukraine Awaits U.S. Response on Delegation Visit to Kyiv
Ukraine has not yet received a response from the United States regarding a proposal to hold negotiations at the level of technical groups in Kyiv. The Embassy of Ukraine in the U.S. noted, that the American side continues to consider this initiative. Kyiv emphasizes its readiness for talks and preparation for the next round immediately after confirmation from Washington. The initiative also предусматривает the possibility of further contacts with the Russian side.
Diplomatic officials stressed that U.S. attention is currently largely focused on the Middle East. At the same time, Ukraine expects that this focus will eventually shift back.
“This is important, as we have one priority — we want to end this war, end it justly, achieve a fair peace, and ensure that it never happens again,” the Embassy said.
The Ukrainian side also emphasized the need for clear security guarantees.
Trump Says Ukraine Is Losing Territory and Criticizes NATO
US President Donald Trump saidthat Ukraine is losing territory in the war, while also noting that Russia is also suffering losses. “They are losing territory,” he said, commenting on the situation on the front line. According to him, Ukraine’s ability to continue fighting depends on access to weapons. He also explained that the United States sells weapons to NATO, and the alliance then transfers them to Ukraine.
At the same time, Trump positively assessed the effectiveness of Ukrainian forces. “They are better than anyone in Europe in this fight,” he said.
He also criticized NATO allies, questioning their willingness to support the U.S. in the event of a major war. “When we needed NATO — they weren’t there for us,” the president said.
He also described Volodymyr Zelensky as a “smart guy,” noting that he generally has a working relationship with him.
