This year, the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) continues the international #RussianShameDay campaign, launched in 2022. The initiative is designed to spread the truth about Russian war crimes and call on the international community to bring justice and accountability to the aggressor state.
This was report Ukrainian World Congress.
The UWC emphasizes that Russia systematically uses May 9 and the theme of victory in World War II as a tool of state propaganda, militarism, and justification of modern aggression against Ukraine.
“By distorting historical facts, Russia and its criminal leadership are using the memory of the victory over Nazism in World War II to promote militarism, justify its aggressive genocidal war against Ukraine and aggressive policy against democratic countries of the world,” said the UWC
The organization draws particular attention to the actions of the so-called “Immortal Regiment,” which, according to Congress representatives, are coordinated from Moscow and are an element of Russian hybrid aggression.
The UWC calls on European Union countries to ban such events.
On the eve of May 9, the Ukrainian World Congress calls on Ukrainian communities, Ukraine’s partners, international organizations, political leaders, and all supporters of Ukraine in the world to hold informational, educational, and advocacy actions.
“We demand justice,” is the main message of the #RussianShameDay campaign.
The UWC proposes to use the information materials, visual campaigns, and testimonies of victims of Russian aggression prepared by the organization.
The organization also calls on the governments of democratic states to:
- join the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine;
- ensure the responsibility of the aggressor state;
- recognize Russian war crimes as genocide of the Ukrainian people;
- recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism;
- prohibit measures that justify aggression and violate the Genocide Convention.
“As May 9 – the Russian Day of Shame – approaches, we call on the civilized world to unite in the name of justice, share the true testimonies of victims of Russian terrorism, and call on political leaders to recognize Russian war crimes as genocide against the Ukrainian people,” the UWC notes.
The Congress emphasizes that modern Russian policy increasingly repeats the practices of totalitarian regimes.
“In their policy in the occupied Ukrainian territories, the Russians are repeating the worst practices of Nazism: mass executions and abuse of civilians, deliberate destruction and theft of private property, destruction of churches, cultural heritage, and mass deportations,” the statement says.
The UWC emphasizes that Russia’s war against Ukraine is a manifestation of modern imperialism and neo-colonialism.
Every year on May 9, a large-scale military parade is held in Moscow with a demonstration of weapons and intercontinental missiles.
“This is just one of the ways in which the Russians use history as a weapon,” the campaign organizers emphasize.
The Ukrainian World Congress calls on all supporters of Ukraine – from social media users to international institutions and opinion leaders – to join the #RussianShameDay campaign.
To do this, the organization suggests contacting local authorities, organizing peaceful actions and demonstrations, and of course, sharing the testimonies of victims of Russian terror and using the official campaign materials, key theses and visual materials, which can be found at the link.
“Support for the global advocacy campaigns of the Ukrainian World Congress is extremely important so that Ukrainian voices are heard around the world,” the organization emphasized.
