A special event titled “A Celebration of Ties Between Ukraine and America: Our Shared Legacy” was held in Washington, D.C., to mark the 30th anniversary of the Constitution of Ukraine. The event, which took place at the House of Sweden, was organized by the Embassy of Ukraine in the United States in cooperation with the Embassy of Sweden.
This was reported by the Світова Федерація Українських Жіночих Організацій and Embassy of Ukraine in the USA.
The event brought together members of the U.S. Congress and their staff, representatives of the U.S. Department of State, the Pentagon, the diplomatic corps, think tanks, businesses, the Ukrainian community, and the media. The gathering served not only as a commemoration of the anniversary of Ukraine’s Basic Law but also as a reminder of the shared democratic values of Ukraine and the United States.
Welcoming remarks were delivered by Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States Olha Stefanishyna, Chargé d’Affaires of Sweden in the United States Jonas Wendel, Congressman Joe Wilson (Republican Party, South Carolina), Congressman Gil Cisneros (Democratic Party, California), former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Paula Dobriansky, Robert McConnell, Co-Founder and President of the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation, and Mykhailo Savkiv Jr., President of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America. The event was moderated by Oleksandr Krapyvnyk of Nova Ukraine.
In her remarks, Olha Stefanishyna emphasized that Ukraine is able to mark the 30th anniversary of its Constitution thanks to the courage of the Ukrainian people and the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who continue to defend the country’s independence in the face of russian aggression. She also thanked the Ukrainian community in the United States for its longstanding support of Ukraine and expressed gratitude to international partners, particularly Sweden, where the original 1710 Constitution of Pylyp Orlyk—one of Europe’s earliest democratic constitutional documents—is preserved.
Particular emphasis during the event was placed on the importance of bipartisan support for Ukraine in the United States and on the role of the Ukrainian diaspora, which has strengthened the Ukrainian voice in American society for decades and contributed to deepening the U.S.-Ukraine partnership.
Participants also noted the symbolism of the current year, as the United States prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of its independence. Against this backdrop, Ukraine’s struggle for freedom, independence, and democratic values enshrined in its Constitution takes on even greater significance.
The cultural portion of the evening featured renowned Ukrainian chef Yevhen Klopotenko and a concert by Ukrainian pianist Oleksii Stupak (Alex Stupak).
Representing the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations at the event were WFUWO representatives to the United Nations Zoryana Holovata and Mariia Chukhnova. The gathering became an important platform for engagement among diplomatic, civic, and diaspora communities and served as another testament to the strong and multidimensional support for Ukraine in the United States—from politics and diplomacy to culture, community engagement, and the preservation of historical memory.
